NrrnD STATES NICOLAS FELIX VETERE, OF BUENOS AYRES, ARGENTINA.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,852,1datedAugust 30, 1898.
Application filed May ll, 1898.
T0 all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that LNlcoLAs FELIX VETERE, machinist, a subject of the King of Italy, re-
siding at No. 570 Oalle Gascon, in the city of- Buenos Ayres, Argentine Republic, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a new system of locks or apparatus of security for iron safes or treasure-chests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,` such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in locks; and it consists in the combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a side view of the frame with the working parts omitted. Fig. II is a similar view showing one of the tumblers and illustrating, diagrammatically, the relative position of the other tumblers. Fig. III is a View similar to Figs. I and II, showing the tumblers in place and in position to permit the opening of the door. Fig. IV is a front View of the casing. Fig. V is a sectional plan view with the key in place. Fig. VI is a vertical sectional view. Fig. VII shows views of detail parts. Figs. VIII and IX are perspective views of the invention, showing the tumblers in unlocked and locked position, one side of the casing being removed.
The lock comprises a frame A', having a central partition G extending partially across the same, said partition forming a support for the pivot E of the tumblers and for the inner end of the key-pin C, which extends with its axis at right angles to the pivot E of the tumblers. The pin C extends into an opening in the front boss B of the casing, which receives the hollow key-shank to be guided by the key-pin.
The partition G has a vgating'G' to receive a part of the fence-bar F, which extends into the casing; but in order to permit the fencebar to enter the gating G the tumblers, now to be described, must have their gatings in line with the gating G. These tumblers (marked T) are pivoted on the pin E, some on one side of the partition G and some on the other side. These tumblers are normally Serial No. 6801403. (No model.)
' pressed by the springs D, so that the gatings A in the said tumblers will be out of alinement with each other and also out of line with the gating in the partition G.
The key has a hollow shank C', and on each side it isV provided with a bit O2 O3, the edges of which are so formed that when they engage the lower laterally-projecting ends T' of the tumblers said tumblers will be rocked on their pivots and the gatings A in the upper ends of the tumblers will be brought into alinement with each other and with the gating `G in the partition G. This position of the parts is shown in Fig. VIII, and the fencebar F is shown as thrust forward, with its end in the alined gat-ings.
In Fig. IX the tumblers are shown in the positions to which they are returned by the springs D. The fence-bar is in this latter ligure shown as unable to move forward, as it meets or engages the edges of the tumblers.
I claim--- l. In combination, the casing, the partition G dividing the same, and having a gating G', a pivot E extending on opposite sides of the partition-plate G, the series of tumbler-plates on each side of the partition-plate having gatings, the key-pin O extending from the partition-plate at right angles to the pivot E, the springs D for holding the tumblers with their gatings out of alinement, the fence-bar and the key adapted to the key-pin and having bits to engage the tumbler-plates, substan tially as described.
2. In combination, the casing, the partition G with the gating G therein, the pivot E eX- tending through the partition and on each side thereof, the tumblers supported on the said pivot, the key-pin also connected with the partition and below the pivot E, and the keyhaving bits to engage the tumblers on the opposite sides of the partition, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NICOLAS FELIX VETERE.
