SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,598,l dated August 9, 1898. Application filed November l2, 1897. Serial No. 658,281. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DOMENICO GUARINO, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of New York city, countyof New York ,Vaud State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Fenders,`of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts. j l This invention relates to improvements in car-fenders; and the objects thereof are to provide a device'of this character adapted for ready attachment to a car, whereby it may be alternately placed upon each end thereof, and to supply a structure adapted to take up but a small space in front of the car, but which will automatically act to prevent a person from being carried beneath the carwheels in the event. of an accident, the device being constructed to operate equally well for the purpose of picking up a person in either a recumbent or a standing position. The invention'will be hereinafter fully de-` scribed, and specically set forth in the annexed claims.` In the accompanying drawings,- forming part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved fender, showing the same attached to the forward end of a car-` platform. Fig. 2 is aplan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation illustrating the device in operative position or in the position assumed by the act of picking up a body. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional elevation taken on a line c of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a front eleva# tion illustrating the parts in position shown in Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention I provide, primarily, an auxiliary narrow platformA. This said platform has an inner curved surface a, concentric with the curved end b of the car-platform B, whereby the auxiliary platform A may readily move laterally by the platform I3 for the purpose of turning curves in the road. The platform A is supported upon a swinging framework C, which comf prises a rod c and branches c', the said branches having fupright projections c2 extended from their respective ends, these said projections engaging apertures a in the aux- Hangers D are projected forward horizontally from each side of the auxiliary platform A. .Mounted between these hangers by means of pins d is a swinging frame E, which comprises in its construction end sections c and cross-braces e' and e2. Secured between the end sections e e is a swinging guard F, fulcrumed at f to the swinging frame E.. "'.This said guard hasa projection F extended laterally from its lower end,`and Vthe exposed surfaces of the guard and projection are respectively supplied with a filling of wire-nettin g f ,or they may be cushioned by upholstering, if desired. An auxiliary guard G is also fulcrumed upon supporting-pins d', extending through the sides e of the framework E. This said guard comprises in its construction side frames g and a crossbrace g. Connected to the cross-brace gis a plate II, which said plate has an upwardly-extended rear wall 7L, which is pivotally connected to and beneath the cross-brace g of the guard G. A similar plate II is pivoted to and beneath the cross-brace e2 of the framework E by means of an upwardly-extended projection or rear wall h. j
Secured to each of the ends e of the frame E is a boxing I, having a iiange 1l projected from the forward edge thereof. I-Iinged'to the boxings I are swinging doors J, comprising upright portions j and swinging armsj and y2, the arms j having pivoted projections js connected thereto. vAll of these said arms are adapted to be folded into the position illustrated inFigs. l and fi of the drawings when the fender is not in active use, and they are maintained in a folded position by means of the flanges 'i of the boxings I, springs j* being provided to throw the arms into horizontal position when they are released from contact with the flanges 'L' by the swinging action of the doors J. The doors J are connected to the swinging fender F by means of links l and eyes 2 and 3, secured, respectively, to the fenderF and'the doors J, whereby rearward movement of .Y the fender F will cause the doors' to'swing into the position illustrated by Fig. 5 ofthe drawings, thus Aperin'itting the arms to'grasp a body and pre IOO vent it from falling from the fender after the same is operated.
A weight c3 is connected to the swinging framework E for thc purpose of automatically operating the device. This said weight rests upon springs b, mounted upon the auxiliary platform A when the fender is in active operative position, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Pivotally attached to the upper cross-brace e' of the frame E is a swinging latch K, which has a shoulder k projected therefrom for engagement with a slotted plate L. This said latch is adapted to be acted upon by contact of the swinging framework G against its lower end when the fender strikes an obstruction or a body, thus allowingr the swinging frame E to drop, a rearward movement of the fender F causing the doors J to fold over and release their projected arms j and ,7'2 for the purpose of grasping the body.
For the purpose of maintaining the swinging fender G in its rearward or set position, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, projections 4: are extended from the lower ends of the side frames g. These said projections engage ratchet-pawls 5, which are fulcrumed to the ends of the swinging framework E.
IVhen it is desired to reset the fender, the pawls can be lifted up by means of sliding rods G, secured to the end frames e of the framework E. These said rods are supplied with notches 7, which engage straps S for the purpose of locking the pawls in an upward or inoperative position while the fender is being set. After it is set and ready for use the pawls are allowed to drop to a normal position.
The auxiliary platform A preferably carries small traction-wheels 9, journaled to hangers l0, which wheels engage with the car-rails for the purpose of guiding the fender.
When the device is used upon a cable-road, a rod l1 is projected downwardly from the center of the auxiliary platform A for the purpose of sliding engagement with the cableslot, as illustrated by Figs. 4; and 5 of the drawings. With this means for guiding the fender the small traction-wheels 9 may bel dispensed with.
In the operation of the device the parts are l set as indicated in Fig. I of the drawings.
IVhen an obstacle is met by the running car, the part first struck is the table I-I. This table is normally held in the position shown in Fig. l by means of the secondary frame H. Being pivoted to the lower end of the swinging frame, said table II is instantly depressed by the obstacle, carrying with it the frame II. The downward course of said frame H causes a rearward action of its rear member against the latch K, which is at once unlocked. This action leaves the weight c3 free to perform its function-z'. c., to depress the upper rear portion of the apparatusthereby throwing the lower forward portion forward and inclining the fender. In the meantime the obstacle, having fallen into the net, is held there by means of the folding doors J, which are brought into clasping position by the action of the weight e3 in depressing the upper part of the fender through the medium of the links l l, which when the fender is forced rearward throw out the said folding doors embracing the obstacle picked up.
To reset the apparatus, the ratchet-pawls 5 are raised by means of the sliding rod G and the fender raised until the latch K engages with the slotted plate L. The apparatus is then ready for action.
I do not confine myself to the specific dctails of mere mechanical construction as herein shown and described, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to structural Variations of design and proportion necessary for different applications of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl l. A car-fender, comprising an auxiliary platform having a tilting framework connected thereto, the said tilting framework carrying a swinging cushioned fender and hinged doors, the said doors being supplied with folding arms and being connected to the said swinging cushioned fender, whereby they may be automatically operated for the purpose of folding over a body, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a car-fender, the combination of an auxiliary platform and means for connecting the same to the platform of a car, and a tilting framework pivotally attached to hangers projected from the said platform, and a swinging cushioned fender connected to the said tilting framework, and a swinging auxiliary framework carrying swinging plates for engagement with the road-bed, and a latch for setting the tilting framework in an upright position and with doors hinged to the tilting framework and connected to the swinging fender by iiexible connections, the said hinged doors having spring-actuated folding arms connected thereto, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a car-fender, the combination with a tilting framework and hinged doors connected thereto, the said doors having spring-actuated folding arms forming part thereof and the said tilting framework having flanges eX- tended therefrom for engagement with the folding arms to maintain them in a folded position, and a swinging auxiliary framework carrying a hinged plate adapted for contact with the road-bed, and a swinging cushioned fender having lateral projections extended from the lower end thereof, the said fender being mounted upon each side of the frames of the said swinging framework, and a latch adapted for maintaining the said parts in an upright position, whereby when the swinging auxiliary framework or the swinging fender is struck, the latch will be released and the device automatically thrown into operative IOO IIO
position, substantially as shown and de` position, said auxiliary framework adapted to swing the latch; with an auxiliary platform connected to a framework fulcrumed beneath the car, and means for supporting,` the said auxiliary platform upon the rails, substantially as shown and described.
