IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
TO ALLWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN L. AVERY, of Norwich, in the county of Chenango, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps for Well Tubes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the `accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved pump, and well tube attached; and
Figure 2, a central vertical section of the same.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of an improved pump for well tubes, by the combination of a metallic plunger and valve with the metallic tubing of a well, and with anovcl and peculiar form of mechanism for imparting a reciprocating movement to said plunger, to withdraw water or oil from the well, as hereinafter more particularly described. Also in the combination of a check-valve and suitablevalve-seat' with' the upper end of a movable plug in the lower end of the tubing of a tubed well, in such a manner as that the valve may be withdrawn for repair, and replaced, without disturbing the tubing ofthe well. My invention is especially designed for wells formed by driving metallic tubes in the earth until water is reached.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the tubing of such a well. In. driving this tubing, whichv is formed of the ordinary metallic pipes used for this purpose, I close the lower end thereof with a pointed plug, B, having a shank, b, extending up into the pipe and fitting closely therein. The lower end of the tube or pipe,
A. is slitted vertically, and corresponding ribs, c, are formed upon the plg to it into said slits.v The .upper' end of the shank of the plug is made hollow, and isvpierced with numerous holes, extending upward from the ends of the ribs, in a line therewith, to the top of the plug. Hence, when the tube is withdrawn from the plug far enough to open the slits, by their withdrawal from the ribs, the apertures above the ribs are thereby uncov ered, leaving free passage for the water surrounding the end of the tube into the hollow shank of the plug, and' so'up into the tubing of the well. Thus, whilst the tubing is being'driven, all sand and dirt lare excluded from the tube until/water is reached and a proper depth is attained, when, bya slight withdrawal or elevation of the tubing, the apertures are uncovered, permitting the Water to enter freely. The upper tubular end of the shank of the plugis bevelled outwardly for a suliicient distance to form a seat for the lower end of a hollow plunger, d, fitting closely in the tube and enclosing a ball or other suitable form of check-valve. The lower end of this plunger or valve-seat is ground so as to make a close, tight joint with the upper end of the plug when dropped down thereon. A hook is xed in the upper end of this valve-seat, so that, by means of a chain or hooked rod, the plunger and valve may be readily withdrawn without disturbing the tubing in which it is placed. In order to withdraw the water dowing into the tubing A, when it has been driven to such a depth as to reach a supply thereof, I place a second plunger or piston, provided also with a ball or other form of valve, within the tubing A, packing it, if need be, with leather or other convenient packing, and connecting it, by means of a rod, to a plate, D, sliding vertically in suitable bearings in a framework placed over the top of tne tube. This `plate is provided with an extended slot, g, formed transversely to its length, in a plane at an angle of about 65,
to receive a friction-roller, z',`pivoted upon the end of the arm of a revolving shaft,"so that the rotation of the shaft creates, by the action and movement of the roller within this slot, a reciprocating movement of the plate, and consequently of its attached plunger. The tube of the well thus becomes the barrel of thc pump. The shaft, c', is made to revolve by means of a' crank thereon, or upon a second arbor, c, connected therewith by means of intermediate gear, as illustrated in the drawings. In order to render the reciprocating movement, thus obtained, more steady and uniform, I apply a spiral compensating spring, x, to the plate in such a manner as that the depression of the plate D, and of the plunger or piston of the pump, shall compress the spring, leaving it to react and assist in the elevation of the piston and of the weight of water lifted thereby. Where it is desirable to place the lower check-valve of the pump at a point above the end of the plug, I make usek of an annular seat, j, made to tit closely and securely withinthe tubing at a joint thereof, if practicable, or,l if necessary, at any other point therein, whose inner edge is bevelled and formed to receive snugly the lower end of aV plunger enclosing a valve, as already described, and which r.can be withdrawn at pleasure from the tubing, as hereinbefore set forth. v
I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent- My improved pump, constructed of the sliding plate g, compensating spring metallic plunger or piston d, and suitable valve and valve-seats j, arranged in combination with the tubing of a well A, and operating substantially in the manner hereinbefore described.
