Be it known that I, MARTIN V. B. WHITE, of the village of Ballston, in the county of Saratoga, and State of New York, .have inventada certain new and improved Ice-Spun" and I do hereby declare -that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hereby had to the accompanying drawings, which form and make a part of this specication.
Like le'tters represent and'refer to like or corresponding parts. Figuresl, '2, and 3, are perspective views showing in different positions my said improved ice-spur .and clearly representing the various parts thereof, each beingV more fully hereinafter. described and set, forth.-
Figures 4 and 5 are also perspective views showing the piece of metal, B` which is designed to be perizia-- nently'fastened to 'the boot or shoe, and to and by means of which the said ice-spurA is fastened onto the heel of the boot or shoe, substantiallyin the manner and for the purposes hereinafter fully described and set forth. Figure 6 is' a perspective view of the spur and piece B, attached and combined together, as they wfrld be when thesaid spur is'attached to the heel of a boot or shoe, substantially ashereinafter descrf'pdand `et torth. Figure 7 is a viewof 'abot or shoe, having attached thereto my said improved iec-spur, ...u 'fully showing the manner in which it is designed to attach the said spur to the said boot or shoe, substantially as hereinafter described and set forth. v
vThenalture of my said invention consists in constructing an ice-spur in two distinct or separate pieces, one piece, B, being securely and permanently fastened to the heel of the boot or shoe, while the other lpiece, A, containing'thespil'r, isdesigned to be adjustable, so that it may be attached or .detached from the` piece B on the heel of the boot or shoe when desired, bymeans of any suitable mechanical means' thatlmay be deemed best substantially as hereinafter fully described and set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art t'o which my invention Irelates to make and use the same.. Irwill here proceed to describe the construction 'and operation of the same, which is as follows, to wit :y
I construct the various part's of my said improved ice-spurfof wrought ironfor anyothermetalfthat will answer'the required purpose. The piece B is attached to the front end of the heel of the boot or shoe by means of screws or otherwise, and it is not necessary toremove the 'same for. the purpose of attaching the said spurA to the boot or shoe, as aforesaid. Upon each end of the said piece B, are prjectionavQC, having Lholes through the same,'whi"ch are for the purpose of allowing thev said spur A to be attached to the sam'e when.
desired, as hereinafter described. i The spur A may bey of any' shape, size, or style desired, and when desired to fasten the same to theheel of a boot or shoe, the shank or arm, D, is slipped through the holes in the projec-- tions C C, on the Apiece B, and is securely held in its place upon the heel of the boot or shoe by means of the spring, E, shown `at gsl, 2, 3, and 6, in the vaccompanying drawings. F, figs. 1, 2, 3,y and 6, isa prjection upon the arm D which' prevents the said spurA 4from dropping forward when attached` to the heel of aboot or shoe in the manner' and by the means aforesaid. By these means I am enabledz to construct an ice-spur `that is adjustable and one that can be attached to or detached from theheel of a boot'or shoe at the pleasure of the wearer.` It is obvious that the sai-d spur A, may be made detachable from the said piece Bl or Aits equivalent, by any mechanical means deemed best without altering the character of my invention, but I have only deemed it necessary to describe the arm orshank D and spring E as .beingone of the best devices for that purpose.l
`Having thus described the nature of my said invention and improvements, what I claim as my invention,
I and desire to secure' by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
The combination of the detachable and adjustable ice-spur A, with the metallic piece B, ory its equivalent,
operating in the manner .and for the purposes substantially as herein fully described and set forth.
In testimony'whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of November, A. D.V 1866.
M'. v. B. wHirE..
