To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. THIELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the'county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Portable Bath-Room and Water Heaters, of which the following'is a specification.

My invention is related to a class of Waterheaters where gas is used for fuel through an ordinary hydrocarbon-burner, and the object of my improvement is to provide a Water,

and room heater that can be easily conveyed from the kitchen-sink to the bath-room or wherever hotwater is needed, and my device is so constructed as to be compact, small, and light. I attain these objects by a mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the heater. Fig. '2 is a top view with cover removed, showing the water-coil and top of gasburners. Fig. 3 is a perpendicular sectional view out on line 3 3, Fig. 2, showing a crosssection of the coil and the platform C. drawn out from under the coil,with the gas-burners attached in position to be used as a roomheater.

The inclosingcaseAis made of any suitable metal, the front side being left open for the reception of the burners. It is provided with a removable hood B, open at top; a coil a; consisting of a flat tube made of verythin' metal folded right and left, the folds being parallel with each other and connected at the ends by return-elbows, leaving small spaces between each lap. Said coil is set perpendicular to the plane of the case. The watersupply pipe f f is connected to the rear lap of the coil at the top edge 1). The dischargepipe h is connected to the front lap at the top edge h and extends downward. The object of connecting the inlet and discharge pipes to the upper edge of the coil is to cause the coil to always retain water, thus preventing the coil from overheating before the water begins to circulate. The coil is then fitted in the case, resting on lugs a. (Seen in Fig. 3.) The platform C is constructed of wood cov-. ered with metal and adapted to slide in between the end pieces ofthe case, provided with a drawer-pull 'n. A series of six or more ordinary gas-burners cl,connected to one sup 55 ply-pipe D, are fixed to the platform, adapted to slide under. the coil when heating water, being held in place by a latch P. Two plain cocks e f are fixed to the two pipes, provided with levers g g, fixed to the handles. The levers are connected to eachother by rod 9 The vobject of thus connecting them is to enable the user to turnthe water and gas on simultaneously, The connecting-rod g has several holes provided at the end. The object of these holes is to regulate theflow of water. 'By moving the lever g to the outer hole g one cock will be opened more than the other, thus supplying more gas and less water, or vice versa. 1

The methodof using the heater when hot water is wanted is as follows: Convey it to the place where hot water is needed and connect the gas-jet on the wall with the gas-inlet on the heater with a hose-pipe and the hydrant with the water inlet on the heater with a hose, have the discharge-pipe lead to the vessel or bath-tub, turn onthe gas and Water by opening the cooks, light the gas, and the water will flow out hot to the place desired. When used as a room-heater, unlatch the the purpose of heating wateris not new, and

I do not claiin it as a part of my invention; neither do I wish to confine myself to the specific form of coil, as it may be of any suitable shape; but

What I do claim, and wish to secure-by Letters Patent, is-

The combination in a portable bath-room and water heater of. a water-heating coil, of a supply-pipe therefor having a valve, the supply-pipe and discharge-pipe connected to the top edge of said coil, a gas-heater supported upon a slidable platform, the gas-supply for said heater being provided with a valve, a detachable connection between the watersupply valve and gas-supply valve whereby when it is desired to heat the apartment in which the water -heater is placed, the two valves may be disconnected and the 1 gasheater withdrawn for heating the room substantially as set forth.
