EDWIN E. SW'IFT, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
LUNCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 607,294, dated July 12, 1898.
Application filed August 9, 1897. Serial No. 647,512. (No model.) i
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. SWIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lunch-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lunch-boxesthat is to say, in boxes having a receptacle for tea, coffee, or other beverages and a separate compartment for meat, vegetables, or other articles of food.
The object of this invention is to provide a lunch-box of simple, strong, and durable c011- struction and in which the receptacle for the beverage is protectedthat is to say, is not liable to be damaged by being placed on tables, benches, machines, 8:0.
The invention consists in the improved lunch-box and in the combination and arrangements of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finallyembodied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lunch-box, certain portions being broken away to better illustrate the nature of my said invention; Fig. 2, a top plan view of Fig. 1, a portion ofthe cover and of the fastening-strap being removed and illustrating a slight modification of the diaphragm or partition arranged in said lunch-box; and Fig. 3, a sectional view on the lines 00 0c of Fig.1, the beverage-receptacle being shown in full.
In said drawings, a represents a box, which may be square, circular, or of any suitable shape and from which the bottom is removed, and substituted therefor is an open inverted box 0, the bottom of which forms a diaphragm or partition within the box a, while its sides 0 serve to strengthen the lower portions of the sides of said box a.
The bottom of the box 0, or, better, the diaphragm or partition, is provided at or near one corner with an aperture or opening 0 and preferably with a series of small perforations or holes 0 as clearly illustrated.
YVithin the box a is arranged a receptacle d, of tin or of any suitable material, adapted to receive the tea, coffee, or other beverages, while the space between the box a and above said diaphragm o is reserved for meat, vegetables, or other articles of food.
The beverage-receptacle (Z is provided at or near one corner with a capped mouth or spout d, adapted when in normal position to extend through the opening 0 of the diaphragm c.
To the cover I) of the box a is secured, as at e, a strap, (preferably of leather,) which strap is adapted to be arranged around the box a and cover 1), intermediately passing through a guide or loop I), arranged on the cover 1) and provided with a buckle f or any other suitable fastening means.
It must be remarked that the height of the receptacle (1 is slightly smaller than the depth of the inverted box 0 and is thus protected by the flanges o of said box a and also by the lower portions of the sides of the box a and is held within position by means of the strap 6, as will be manifest.
The perforations c in the diaphragm 0 will be found of great advantage in keeping the comestibles warm by means of the heat radiating from the beverage-receptacle d, es-
pecially when the latter is used for hot tea,
coffee, soup, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a box or receptacle and its removable lid or cover, of an inverted box arranged in the lower portion of said receptacle and dividing the latter into an upper and lower compartment, thebottom of said inverted box being perforated and provided at or near one corner with an aperture or opening, while the sides or flanges thereof bear against the lower portions of the sides of the box or receptacle, a beverage-receptacle arranged in the lower compartment and provided at or near one corner with a capped mouth or spout adapted to penetrate the hole or aperture in the bottom of the inverted box,
the dimensions of said beverage-receptacle being smaller than the dimensions of lower compartment, and a fastening-strap for normally holding the cover on the box or receptacle-and the beverage-receptacle within its respective compartment, all said parts, substantislly as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of August, 1897.
EDWIN E. SWIFTJ Vituesses:
