Description

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WEBSTER HERRICK, of Northampton, in the count'yof` Hampshire, and State of Massaehusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Mill Carriage Rollers; and I do hereby declare fn that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to A" -f make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists informing the journals of saw-mill carriage rollers of such a shape that the roller and the journals can be cast in one piece, and all lateral motion in the roller and in the carriage which rests upon it be prevented.
Figure I represents a side view; and
Figure 2, a top view of my saw-mill carriage roller.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A is the roller; B is the chair or stand upon which the roller rests; VC represents a sectionof the saw-mill carriage. After much experience in the management of saw-mills, I have ascertained that rollers with tapering journals prevent lateral motion in the carriage. By using rollers under the carriage, with journals of this form, a. diiiiculty long experienced in manufacturing lumber is overcome. To saw lumber w'ith any Adegree of accuracy the carriage, and consequently the log, must move without lateral motion. In revolving, the natural tendency of my roller is to the centre, and no shoulderor collars are necessary to keep it there. In the roller commonly used the sides of the journals are parallel, and shoulders or collars are depended upon to keep it in place. The box on the chair B is formed to t the taper journal, and also so as to allow the roller to be easily removed. I do not conne myself to any particular angle or taper for my roller ournal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire `to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A saw-mill carriage roller, with tapering journals, substantially as herein shown and described.
WEBSTER HERRICK.
