CORSET-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 607,022, dated July 12, 1898.
Application filed February 15,1897. Serial No. 623,346. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. H. Dowsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corset-Fastenings, of which the following is a full specification.
My invention relates to corsets; and it consists of an improved fastening for the same having a male member and a female member, as hereinafter described in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 shows a plan of the metal strips at the front of a corset embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged plan of the under side of my female member. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is the same, except that the section is taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 1, and shows the male member engaged therewith. Fig. 5 shows in section the parts of my female members before they are assembled.
In the drawings, A and B are the two metal strips secured to the front edges of my corset. The strip A is provided with the male members E and the strip B with female members F. The male members E consist of a stud having an enlarged head 6 and contracted neck 6, the stud being suitably secured to the face of the strip A. The female members]? consist of the plate O and socket-piece D, the plate 0 being suitably secured to the strip B, so that it projects over its edge at right angles to its length and carries in its projecting end the socket-piece D, as shown. The plate 0 is provided with the hole 0, through which the socket-piece is inserted and riveted, and the slit 0, which either terminates in the hole 0 or extends to the rear edge of the plate 0, as shown in the lower fastener in Fig. 1. The plate 0 is split for purposes of resiliency in order that the socketpiece may expand slightly when riveted in the hole a. 'The socket-piece D is used with the split plate 0, and before being attached thereto has the shape shown in Fig. 5. It consists of the cap or attaching part Z, the plate-attaching shoulder Y, the socket-chamber T, and
the stud-grippin g extension X, formed by the rolled-in neck V and the backwardly-turned supporting-flange NV. The cross-section of the stud-gripping extension X is of the shape of an 8, whose lower curved end extends inward toward the center, forming the rolledin neck V. The socket-piece D has the slits :20, extending through the neck V and the flange W, so that a resilient ring or neck V is formed, through which a solid stud may be forced, as shown in Fig. 4. The slits 00 also extend up above the shoulder Y into the attaching part Z, as shown, and above the said shoulder these slits are alternated by the perforations y in the sides of the attaching part Z. By this means the attaching part Z is readily upset onto the plate 0, which cannot be easily accomplished if the walls are solid. The socket-piece D is attached to the plate 0 by pressing the cap or attaching part Z up through the hole 0 until theplate rests upon the attaching-shoulder Y and the edge of the supporting-flange WV. Then while holding the stud-gripping extension X in a suitable supporting-die a suitably-shaped die is pressed upon the cap or attaching part Z, which is thus swaged down upon the plate O, gripping the said plate 0 tightly between its overlapping edge 2 on the upper side and the shoulder Y and the flange WV on the under side.
Thus the socket-piece has the cap or attaching piece Z, with its perforations y and upper ends of the slits a: above the plate 0, the studgripping extension below the plate, and a socket-chamber T above the resilient neck V.
I do not claim as my invention a socketpiece from which a complete socket member of a ball-and-socket fastener is formed in the act of securing said piece to a glove or other article on or with which said member is used, 0
having a perforated separable flange surrounding a yielding socket-entrance, a top section, separate foldable resilient sides, substantially parallel with each other, integral with the top section and preformed flange, 5
the material between the flanges, complete I00 the socket entrance and impart resiliency thereto.
I claim 1. A fastening for corsets and other articles consisting of a male and female part, of which the female part consists of a plate provided with a socket-piece, having the stud-gripping extension X below the plate consisting of a neck and supporting-flange, substantially as shown and described.
2. A fastening for corsets and other articles consisting of a male and female part, the latter having a socket-piece having the cap, carried by a plate, an attaching-shoulder, and the gripping extension below the plate substantially as shown and described.
3. A fastening for corsets and other articles consisting of a male and female part, of which the female part consists of a split plate, havin g attached thereto a female or stud-receivin g chamber, having attaching-shoulders and a gripping-neck, substantially as shown and described.
4:. A fastening for corsets and other articles consisting of a metal strip A provided with male members, and a metal strip B provided with female members, of which the female members consist of a plate 0 and a socket D having the attaching-shoulder Y and amale gripping extension X substantially as shown and described.
5. A fastening for corsets and other articles consisting of a male and female member, of which the female member is provided with a socket-chamber having the male gripping extension X below the plate consisting of the neck V and the flange W, substantially as shown and described.
6. A fastening for corsets and other articles i hand.
