UNITE STAT S JAMES B. TURNER, OF COUDERSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.-
PICTURE-FRAME HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 606,816, dated July 5, 1898.
Application filed August 4, 1897.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMESBIFURNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ooudersport, in the county of Potter and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture- Frame Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in picture-frame hangers, the object of the same being to provide a device which will support a picture-frame in a more effective manner than by the use of cords or wires usually employed in this connection.
The invention contemplates an arrangement by which the inclination of the frame can be varied and the adjustment securely held.
The following description is intended to describe the detail parts and their connection with each other and relative arrangement with respect to the picture-frame, and what I consider to be the novel features of construction are fully set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a View showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the attachment or hanger, the extensible rod being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a view illustrating a modification of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the extensible rod, which is made of the telescopic sections 2 and 3, formed of a tube and rod, respectively, one end of the tube being flattened and either pro-. vided with a hole 4, as shown, or bent into a hook, according to whether'it is to be hung upon a nail or picture-molding. The sections are held when adj usted" one upon the other by means of a set-screw 5, passing through the tubular section '2 and engaging the inner section of rod 3. The lower end of the rod is Serial No. 647,103. (No model.)
provided with the members 6 6, having holes through which the retaining-screws pass for attaching the device to a picture-frame. Upon the tubular section of the extensible rod is mounted a sleeve 7 secured thereon by a setscrew 8, the said sleeve having projecting ears 9, which are pierced transversely to receive a pivot or bearing-pin 10, which connects thereto a link 11, the outer end of said link carrying a pivoted section or bracket 12, by which it is connected-to thev upper part of the picture-frame.
In attaching the hanger the extensible rod is attached to the lower end of the pictureframe, and the bracket or pivoted section 12 is attached to the upper end thereof, and the angle of the extensible bar with respect to the picture-frame can be Varied by adjusting the collar '7 thereon up or down. The picture-frame can then be hung by placing the upper end of the extensible rod in engagement with a nail or picture-molding, and by providing the extensible rod the same can be lengthened or shortened to suit the size of the picture-frame. When the frame is supported by this improved hanger, it will be maintained at a proper inclination with respect to the wall, and the parts being securely held in an adjusted position will form a secure and effective hanger for the frame or picture.
The modification consists in making the extensible bar of two strips 13 133, one having a slot 14, through which passes a thumb-screw 15, carried by the other section, and in this modification the extensible bar is provided with a hooked plate 16, engaging a correspending hooked plate 17, attached to the lower end of the picture-frame, while the link 19, which regulates the inclination of the frame, is adjustable upon one section of the extensible bar by means of a thumb-screw passing through said link and through a slot in the bar. The modification also shows a hook 20, by which the device is placed in engagement with the ordinary picture-molding.
The manner of connecting the .mo'dified form of hanger to the frame is similar to that shown and described in connection with the preferred form of construction.-
It will be understood, of course, that other modifications or changes could be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts the bars in positive engagement with each other, a link rigidly attached to the upper cross-bar of the frame, a slide ad justably connected to the upper bar, and means for pivotally connecting the link and slide, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES B. TURNER. \Vitnesses:
K. ZIMMEHMAN, F. E. AUSTIN.
