BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,629, dated June 28., 1898.
Application ined Mach is, 1897.r
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Creston, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and 'I do hereby exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
, My invention -has relation to buckles for harness and for all the various purposes for which: the buckle may bedesired; and it consists, essentially, in providing two members movably secured together with respect to each other, one of said members being permanently secured in position near the end of a strap or other desired location.
The object of my invention is to provide a reliable securing device of the character specified which may be readily applied to its intended use and cheaply manufactured.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view vof my improved buckle, showing the open position. Fig. 2 is a showing the closed position. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the fixed member. Fig. 4; is a perspective detail of the movable inember. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of Fig. 2 on line v Reference will be had to the variousdetails of my invention by figures, the same figure referring to the same part throughout the several views.
In materializin g my improved buckle I pro-- vide the base l, having centrally-disposed slotted opening 2. Integrally formed with or otherwise secured to the base is the flange or side wall 3 and the section or cover 4, lying parallel with the base, preferably having the raised, centrally-disposed, longitudinal rib 5, the purpose of which will be hereinafter set forth. Movably secured to the base l is they locking-plate 6, having the outwardly-extending flange 7, designed to inclose the opening between the free edge of the cover or plate 4 Said holder 6 is mounted in position upon the base by means of the post 8,- which is permanently fixed to the sliding serial No. 627,345. I (No moan.)
rated and easily removed' fromthe casing,
when it and-the tug can readily be putin working condition and Vthen inserted in the casing. The stud 8 on this` plate is some distance from the lower edge of the plate, and when inserted in the aperture of the tug thev tug and plate can then be placed in the casing. This is readily and easilydone, as the casing has an open side, and when the stud 8 is just above the upper edge ofthe casing the tug and plate can be pushed in sidewise, or the tug can be inserted in the casing through its open sidebefore being connected with the locking-plate. the casin g through the open side than through the bottom. The flange on plate 6 covers the open side, thereby fully protecting the parts therein. The post 8 extends outwardly suiiiciently toprovide a reliable means for anchoring the 4end of a strap or other object which it is desired to secure, the free end of the post after' passing through a suitablyprovided aperture in said strap being received and guidedby the groove 5, formed upon the cover 4. By this construction .it will be observed that the plate 6, with its accompanying`parts, may be reciprocated upon the base l, either for the purpose of removing the end of a strap or for reliably securing it in position.
The operation or use of myimproved buckle 0r securing device may be stated to be as follows: The fixed member or base l is anchored or secured in position' upon the strap or other object .by means of the rivets 10 or by other preferred means. The movable member is then moved to the open position," when the end of the-strap or other object having suitably-provided apertures is entered under the free end of 'the cover 4 and extended out through the other end thereof into engagement with the'post 8, which latter takes into the desired aperture, when by withdrawing said strap the movable member will be drawn entirely Linder the cover 4, the free end of the post vextending into the grooved seat 5, thus securing or locking the strap or other Itis easier to pla-ce the tug in IOO object in position. The securing device may be unlocked by pulling upon the free end of the strap, thus causing the movable member to move from under the cover 4, When the strap may be disengaged from the post S and readj usted by entering the post into another aperture or it may be entirely Withdrawn.
It will be seen that l have produced a reliably efiieient securing device or buckle Whieh may be cheaply manufactured and readily applied to use upon harness, Suspenders, and all the'various purposes for which a buckle is desirable, and having thus fully described ihe operation and construction thereof further reference is deemed unnecessary.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A buckle composed of a fixed easing having an open side and a vertical slot in its rear part and a groove in its front part, a movable plate having a flange to cover said open side and a fastening-stud working in said groove, as set forth.
2. A buckle consisting of a fixed casing, having an open side and a central vertical slot in its rea-r part, and an adjustable and removable plate having a fiange to cover said open side, and a retaining-stud Working in said Vertical slot, as set forth.
3. A buckle composed of a fixed easinghaving a vertical groove in partof its front and a slot in its rear part, a movable plate having a fastening-pin Working in said groove and slot, as set forth.
4. A buckle composed of a fixed easing having a vertical groove in its front and a slot in its rear part respectively and a movable plate having a fastening device working in said groove and slot, as set forth.
In testimony whereof. I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. LAWRENCE.
