Be it known that I, MADIsoN DALLAS, a citi zen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and use;-

ful Improvements in Back Band Buckles for Trace-Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improvement in backband buckles, and has fonits object to furnish a cheap, strong, and easily-manipulated back-band buckle.

In the drawings, Figure '1 represents a side view of the back-band buckle complete, the two parts composing said buckle being slid a short distance apart. Fig. 2 is a side View of the main plate of the back-band-buckle; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, 0f the back-band buckle, showing the band itself engaging with said buckle.

Referring to the drawings, in Fig. 2 is represented the main plate, which has near its upper portion a slot A, extending nearly the whole Width of the plate and through which a loop of the band is placed. Slightly below the center of this slot is a perforation B for the purpose of enabling a string or wire to be passed therethrough to secure such plates together in bundles.

0 represents a headed stud fastened at one side of the plate, which engages with the slot L (see Fig. 1) on the other plate and acts as a guide when the plates are slid upon each other.

E represents a corrugation in the plate, which engages with the corrugation M in the other plate and acts as a guide.

Below the corrugation E is a raised groove F, in which is located the slot D, with which the headed stud Nin the second plate engages. The lower part of the plate is provided with a projection G, which is bent in the form of a loop and engages a similar projection 0 upon the second plate. The second plate is provided with integral arm J, the edges of which are slightly serrated, as shown at j, for the purpose of holding the band. The free end of this arm J is upturned, as shown at R. Below the arm J is a slot L, which runs nearly the whole width of the plate and with which the headed stud C, which is secured to the first plate.

which engages a similar corrugation E upon In the lower part of the plate is a headed stud N, which engages the slot D in the first plate. The lower part of the second plate is upturned, as at P, forming a handle or catch. The arm J is provided with a central hole J, so that several plates may be strung or wired together.

In operation a loopof the band is passed up through the slot A, the two plates being slid apart as far as possible. They are then slid together, the arm J engaging the loop in .the band, which is then pulled tight, as shown in Fig. 3. These plates may be made of any suitable material and in any suitable way, but are preferably stamped from sheet-steel.

A back-band buckle composed of two plates adapted to slide the one upon the other, each plate being provided with a headed stud engaging in a slot of the other plate,one of said plates being provided with a slot and the other being provided with a serrated arm for securing the back-band to the buckle, sub stantially as described. 3. A back-band buckle composed of two parts adapted to slide the one upon. the

and the second part being provided with a serrated arm having an upturned end, two guiding projections, a slot, a guiding-stud, a handle or catch, and a part cooperating with the projection on the first-named plate to form a hook, substantially as described.
