SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 606,256, dated June 28, 1898.

Be it known that I, JOHN A. TRIMBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inte rior, in the county of Jackson and State of South Dakota, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Non Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in non-refillable bottles, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device of this description, which will absolutely preclude the refilling of the bottle and the selling of the contents thereof as the original package by making it necessary to break awaya prominentportion of the neck of said bottle,which may carry the trademark of the original n1anufacturer,before the contents of the bottle can be withdrawn.
It is a well-known fact that the goods of certain manufacturers are imitated by the refilling of their bottles after the same have been emptied, thus not only defrauding the manufacturer of his just profits, but also i11- j uring his reputation by the sale of inferior goods under his trade-mark or name. All of this is entirely obviated by my improvement, since it is impossible to withdraw the contents of such a bottle without first breaking away a prominent portion thereof, so that the most casual observer will note the fact that the bottle has been previously used and emptied.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the upper portion of the bottle is shown in vertical section made in accordance with my improvement.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the neck of a bottle, which has formed therewith an extension B, projecting downward at an angle and having a passage 0 formed therein. The top of the neck is closed, as indicated at D, and has a small hole formed therein, through which passes the rod E, having a head F upon its lower end, while its upper end may be provided with a knob G for its manipulation. One portion of the neck which corresponds to the mouth of the ordinary bottle, as indicated at H, is somewhat smaller than the space I next thereabove, and the passage 0 is likewise larger than the space H, so that a cork may be easily inserted through the passage G into the space I, with its larger end upward, and this is accomplished when the plunger-rod is in an elevated position, so that the cork may be easily passed sidewise into the'space I, after which the downward movement of the plunger-rod will force the cork downward into the space H, which corresponds to the mouth of the bottle, thus securely corking the bottle against the outflow of its contents. Of course it will be understood that the bottle is filled previous to these operations, so that when the cork is thus driven home it will be impossible for it to be withdrawn, and therefore the contents of the bottle cannot by any means be extracted therefrom without breaking away a portion of the bottle, and this I provide for by reducing the thickness of the neck upon the line J or by forming a suitable number of holes around this line.
Goods placed in such bottles and sold may be withdrawn by breaking away the upper portion of the neck upon the line J, and this is accomplished by a light blow or otherwise, after which the cork maybe easily withdrawn from the mouth of the bottle, the contents of the latter poured therefrom as desired, and the cork used to temporarily close the bottle;
