JOHN INESLEY MOKNIGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO PHILIP LEWVIN, JULIUS L. LEXVIN, MARCUS LEW'IN, AND MAURICE S. LEVVIN, OF SAME PLACE.
PROTECTOR FOR IANQANDESCETNT' BURNERSQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,226, dated June 28, 1898/ Application filed June 15,1897. Serial No. 640,824. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WEsLEY Mc KNIGHT, a citizenof the United States, resicL ing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Incandescent Lights; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the invention,
IO such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to protectors or guards, and particularly to protectors for the r 5 chimneys and mantles of incandescent burners wherein an incandescent mantle is employed; and the objects of the invention are to provide a protector of this character adapted to fit chimneys or globes'of different sizes and to prevent flies or other insects from entering the chimney and injuring the mantle or from alighting upon the chimney and occasioning an accumulation of matter thereon, which not only dirties the chimney, but
dampens the same, so that when the burner is lighted the chimney will break.
A further object of the invention is to prevent the pieces of glass from falling upon the floor or other objects if the chimney should break, and also to provide a protector which can be secured in position without jarring the mantle; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists inthe construc-.
tion and arrangement of parts hereinafter 5 more, fully described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of a burnerand chimney provided with my improved protector. Fig.
0 2 is a side elevation of a burner and chimney, showing my improved protector in position thereon, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a cen-j tral longitudinal section of the construction shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow X. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow Y andFig. 6 is a sectional View of the base portion.
bracket 1 is mounted in the usual mannena 55 burner 2, adapted to be used in, connection j with an incandescent mantle, and this burner may be of the usual construction, forit forms nopart of this invention. My improved protector consists of several parts, which are made detachable from the burner and chimney and from each other in order that when one part becomes unfit for use a new part may be substituted without renewing the entire protector, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The lower or base portion 30f the protector is constructed of wire-mesh or other suitable material, preferablysemispherical in form, to fit the convex base or lower portion of the burner, and the rim or edge of the base portion 3 is bound or edged with a stripe, of metal or other material, as shown in Fig. 6,
to retain thewires in position and to give'rigidity thereto, and in the bottom of the'base portion 3 is formed an opening 5, made of any suitable size and shape to fitthe buriier-tube, upon which it is secured, and the edge of the base portion around the opening 5 is provided with a metallic or other binding 6 of suitable 8o character.
It will be understood that the base portion fimay be constructed in a different form? or configuration fromthat herein shown and described, so, that it, will f t or inclose the lower 8 5 portion of any incandescent burner to which it may be desirable to apply the same.
The maijnorbody portion 6f'oi:"t he'protector is cylindrical in form, and the free edges 7 and 8 are bound or faced with a metallic or 0 other strip 9, and the upper and lower edges 'are also similarly bound or faced, and at one end or extremity of the bindings or facings 10 and 11 are secured pins or studs 12, adapted to enter openings 13 in theother ends of 5 the bindings or facings lO,and 11, and bymeans of these openings the diameter bf the main portion 6 may be increased or di1ninished, according to the size of the chimney with which it is desired to be used.
The top or cap portion 14: is composed of a cylindrical part 15, the sides or edges 16 of which are bound or faced with a metallic or other strip, as shown in Fig. 2, and these strips are connected by means of Wire loops or staples 17, which pass through openings in the strips, and the ends of the loops are bent or clenched upon the inside of the strips in any suitable manner, and the upper edge of the top portion 14 is bound or faced with a metallic or other strip 18, and, if preferred, the lower edge may be so bound or faced, but it is not so shown in the drawings.
Upon the upper bound or faced edge 18 is removably secured a metallic band or rim 19, having an inwardly-directed annular flange 20, and within this band and resting upon said flange is detachably held a circular top 21, preferably concave-convex in cross-section, and this top is constructed of wire-mesh of coarser texture than the other parts of the protector; but, if desired, the same may be constructed of any other suitable material.
If found desirable in practice, the top or cap portion may be hinged or otherwise connected to the main portion 6, and by making the base portion 3 in substantially the manner shown and described the same may be readily secured below the base of a burner, and thereby flies or other insects will be prevented from crawling up into the chimney and mantle and injuring them, and by the peculiarconstruction of the main portion .6
the same may be easily adjusted or removed without jarring or injuring the mantle, and the top or cap portion 14 may also be readily secured in position or removed, and when the top 21 is burned out or injured a new one can easily be inserted'within the band 20, and thuseach part of the protector can be removed or renewed in dependently of the other parts.
The top or cap portion 14L also serves to keep flies and other insects from crawling into the top of the chimney and injuring the chimney and mantle, and the main portion 6 protects the exterior of the chimneyfronl these insects and from the injuries which they cause.
I do not desire to confine myself to the construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes in and modifications of the same as come within the scope of my invention.
Having accurately described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I v 1. A removable protector of the character described, consistingofindependentportions, a cup-shaped base portion, an adjustable main portion, and a top or cap portion.
2. A protector of the character described, consisting of a cup-shaped base portion, an
adjustable cylindrical main portion, and a cylindrical top or cap portion, and a removable top for the cap portion, said parts being removable from the burner and chimney and independent of each other.
3. A protector of the character described consisting of a cup-shaped base portion having an opening in the bottom thereof for the admission of the burner-tube, an adjustable main portion and a cylindrical top portion.
4. A protector of the character described consisting of a cup-shaped base portion having an opening in the bottom thereof, the edges of said opening and of the base portion being provided with a metallic binding, an adjustable main portion and a top portion.
5. A protector of the character described consisting of a cup-shaped base portion having an opening in the'bottom thereof for the admission of the burner-tube, the edges of said opening and of the base portion having a rigid binding, a cylindrical main portion provided with rigidly-bound edges, means for adjusting the same and a top portion.
