N0. 604,578. Patented May 24,1898.
W 186% [ya Ewan! l UNITED STATES PATENT DANIEL BUNNELL AND ASHER A. BROWER, OF ARKANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
WlRE-TIGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 604,578, dated May 24, 1898.
Application filed August 31, 1897. Serial No. 650,083- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DANIEL BUNNELL and ASHER A. BROWER, citizens of the United States, residing at Arkansas City, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Tighteners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wire-tighteners; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafterfullydescribed and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the wire-tightener. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same.
A is a portion of a fence-post, and b is one of the fence-wires.
B is a driving-peg provided with a point I) at one end and a hooked portion 0 at the other end.
The hooked portion 0 is of about one-half the length of the body of the peg, and it is provided with a point 0. A means for revolving the peg is provided, such as a removable wrench D. A rectangular projection (55 is provided on the end of the hooked portion 0 for the jaw of the wrench to engage with.
The short pointed portion of the device is arranged parallel with the peg.
The peg is driven for about one-half its length into the fence-post, and the fence-wire is slipped into the hooked portion, as shown in Fig. 1. The peg is then revolved by means of the wrench, and the Wire is wound upon it until the wire is sufficiently tight. The peg is then driven farther into the post, so that the point 0 enters the post and prevents the tension of the wire from revolving the peg in the reverse direction. The wrench is then removed.
What we claim is A fence-wire tightener, comprising a revoluble straightpeg pointed at one end and provided with a hooked portion at its other end, said hooked portion being provided with a projection cl suitable for a wrench to engage with and having a straight and pointed portion shorter than the peg and arranged parallel with it, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof we affiX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
