E. J. HAGAN. SCREEN DOOR FASTENING.
No. 604,468. Pa ented 24,1898.
w 1 3 f yn '13 l q H} UNTTED STATES ATENT FFICEQ' ELIJ AH J. I-IAGAN, OF BAYARD, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT C. OCHELTREE, OF SAME PLACE.
SCREEN-DOOR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,468, dated May 24, 1898.
Application filed August 5, 1897. Serial N0. 647,143. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIJAH J. HAGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bayard, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screen-Door Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. 7
My invention relates to rotatable d y brushes or fans adapted to be connected with doorframes and operated by screen-doors, so as to brush away flies and prevent them from entering the doorway inopening and closing the door.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts herein-' after fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a door-frame and a screen door provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the means for locking the vertical roller against rotation.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates an ordinary door-frame, and 2 a screen-door hinged thereto. Secured to said frame near the top and bottom are brackets 3, in which is journaled a vertical springroller 4, similar to the ordinary curtain-rollers. The lower end of this roller is formed with a slot 5, with which is adapted to engage an arm 6, pivoted to the lower bracket 3. This roller is provided with a number of strips 7,- of textile or fibrous material. Secured to the upper part of the screen-door is an arm 8, to which is secured one end of a cord 9, which is wound around the roller and the other end secured thereto.
Secured to the upper part of the door-frame are brackets 10, in which is journaled a horizontal spring-roller 12, similar and at a right angle to the roller 4. Secured to this roller and wound around the same is a cord 13, the other end of which is secured to roller 4. This roller 12 is also provided with strips or streamers 14:.
The operation is as follows: When the screen-door is opened, the cord connected with the arm of the door will rotate the roller 4, which by means of the cord 13 will rotate the horizontal roller 12. The strips or streamers secured to these rollers will brush away any flies or other insects near the door and will also prevent them from entering the doorway. After the door has been released the rollers will be rotated in the opposite direction by their springs closing the door and winding up the slack of the cords.
It frequently happens that furniture or other articles are desired to be carried through the doorway. In this case after the door has been opened the pivoted arm 6 is engaged with the slot 5 in roller 4, so as to prevent the roller from rotating and the door from closing. While in this condition, the door may be opened and closed without rotating the rollers.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is The combination with a door-frame and screen-door hinged thereto, of the vertical spring-roller, provided with strips or streamers, and formed with a slot or groove at the lower end, the pivoted arm, the cord secured to and wound around said roller, the arm secured to the door with which said cord is also connected, the horizontal spring-roller, provided with strips or streamers, the cord wound around and secured theretoand to the vertical roller, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIJAI'I J. HAGAN.
