J. REEPMAKER.
TOY 0R PUZZLE.
No. 604,416. Patented May 24, 1898,
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB REEPMAKER, OF ROTTERDAM, NETHERLANDS.
TOY OR PUZZLE.
SEEGIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,416, dated May 24, 1898.
Application filed May 28, 1897. Serial No. 638,663. (No model.) Patented in England May 15, 1897, No. 12,029; in France May 20,1897,No.254,747, and in Belgium May 22,1897, No. 99,567.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB REEPMAKER, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing at 52 Westersingel, Rotterdam, Netherlands, have invented a new Toy or Puzzle, (for which I have received Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 12,029, dated May 15,1897; in France, No. 254:,747,dated May 20, 1897, and in Belgium, No. 99,567, dated May 22, 1897,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct an apparatus which may be used as a toy or puzzle.
Now according to this invention I provide a box or other suitable receptacle, of glass or other suitable transparent material, having an aperture in the top thereof. At the bottom of the receptacle are spaces marked with numbers or letters, or the bottom of the receptacle may be marked with letters, numbers, names,
pictures, or figures, and I provide as many puppets or figures as there are numbers, letters, or spaces at the bottom of the receptacle, which puppets are inclosed in the box.
The object of the toy or puzzle is to place each of the puppets or figures in an erect position on the space, letter, number, name, or picture corresponding to that marked on or indicated by the puppets or figures.
In order that my said invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to explain the same with reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the receptacle with figures removed. Fig. 2 is a section of same. Fig. 3 shows one of the puppets or figures. Fig. 4 shows the piece of wood or other material for actuating the puppets.
The same letters denote the same parts in all the figures.
a is a box or receptacle made of glass, celluloid, or other transparent material. If the box is made of glass, the top, sides, and bottom may be set in a frame of wood or other suitable material, or the several pieces of glass forming thebox may be held together by means of strips of paper, leather, or other suitable material cemented to the glass. A
hole I] is formed in the top of the box, through which the piece of wood or other suitable material is inserted.
d d d are puppets or figures made of any suitable material and made to represent any personages, persons, animals, orbodies. Each of these figures is attached to or formed in one with a suitable foot, preferably oblong.
The bottom f of the box is made flat to allow the figures cl to stand erect thereon and is divided into spaces, and the spaces are,
numbered to correspond with a similar numher on one of the puppets, there being as many puppets inclosed in the box as there are numbered spaces at the bottom of the box, or the bottom of the box may have pictures thereon corresponding to the puppets, or the spaces may be named or lettered instead of numbered, or the spaces may be dispensed with altogether and the bottom of the box simply numbered, lettered, or otherwise marked.
The object of the toy or puzzle is to place each of the puppets or figures in an erect position on the particular space, letter, figure, picture, or number on the bottom of the box corresponding with the said puppets or marks thereon by means of a piece 0 of wood or other suitable material, which is inserted through the hole I). The ends of the piece 0 may be formed in any desired shape, preferably that which will increase the difficulty of manipulating the figures.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a toy or puzzle of a box or receptacle (1 having an aperture 1) in the top thereof and a bottom f divided into spaces or marked with letters numerals pictures figures or the like, with as many puppets or figures d as there are spaces numerals letters pictures or the like at the bottom of the box and marked to correspond therewith, and a piece a of wood or other suitable material adapted to be inserted in the aperture b and by means of which piece each of the said puppets or figures may be placed in an erect position on the space letter figure numeral pic- J. REEPMAKER.
