Description

A. HALE'.
Gang-Plow. Y N6:- 69g396. Patented Nov 6, 1666.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ALONZO HALE, OF EUREKA, ILLINOIS.
IM PROVEM ENT IN SULKY-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,390, dated November 6, 1866.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo HALE, of Eureka, in the county of Woodford and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gang-Plow 3 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being vhad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The novelty of this invention consists in the manner by which the beams of a gangplow are attached to the axle, and by which they are elevated and lowered.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l is a top-plan view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation from the line w x.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A A represent two wheels, of ordinary construction, that run on an axle, B, which is also of common construction.
(l C are two long beams made of wood, and connected at suitable distances apart by means of cross-ties D D, being framed into the said beams O O.
E E are four inclined posts, the lower ends of which are iirmly secured to the outsides of the beams C O, the said posts being connected by proper top cross-beams, F F, that run longitudinally with the beams C O. Upon the top of these cross-beams F F is a tlat timber, Gr, that connects and is secured to the two top cross-beams, F F, in the center of which is secured the spring H, to which is attached the drivers seat I.
About midway up and down the posts E are secured horizontal pieces J J. One end A of each extends forward, and connects to inclined braces K K, that extend and are secured to the foot of the posts E.
Atthe front ends of the horizontal pieces J J isa board or platform, L, for the feet of the driver.
M is the tongue, to which the team is attached and by which the machine is operated. This tongue M is attached to the front end of the beams C C by means of an eyebolt passing through the rear end of the tongue in a vertical position, while a long bolt, N, passes through the said eye upon the lower side of the tongue, and through the front ends of the beams C C.
At the rear end of the tongue are braces O O, 'secured to the said tongue, which extend around and receive through eyes the said bolt N. P P are also braces, one end of which are secured to the axle and the other end to the ends of the beams O O.
Q is a ratchet in the form of a sector, and secured to the horizontal timbers J upon the right side of the driver, for'the purpose of holding the plows in an elevated position.
R is a lever secured to the axle B, and works in the ratchet in the sector Q, and is kept in its position by means of the guide-rod S.
T T are the plows, secured by standards to the beams C C. These plows are of ordinary construction.
Y Y are jack-chains attached to the axle B and plow-beams O O, so that the plows are allowed a lateral motion as well as vertical.
The operation of my pl'owsis perfect, being of light draft and easily. managed, and the depth of plowing regulated by means of the lever B and sector Q.
When it is desired to elevate the plows the lever B is turned forward and the chains are wound up around the axle B, which raises the plows, which may be held in any desired po'- sition by catching the leverR into one of the notches in the sector; and when it is desired to move the plows from place to place the tongue may be held up to the front crosspiece at the front end of the horizontal pieces J J by the hook a.
The teammay be attached to the tongue in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The jack-chains YY, connected tothe axle B and lever B, in combination with the plow-beams O O, when constructed and operated substantially as andfor the purposes as herein shown and described.
2. The chains Y Y, in combination with the axle B, lever R, and sector Q, for the purposes herein set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 23d day of July, 1866.
ALONZO HALE.
Witnesses P. WORDEN, H. B. SMITH.
