MACHINE FOR CUTTING CHEESE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,635, dated November 16, 1897. Application file l August '3, 1897. Serial No. 646,894. (No model.)
ject thereof'is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved machine; Fig. 2, an end view thereof; Fig. 3, a side view of the knife which forms a part of my improvement, and Fig. 4 a partial section on the line 4 40f Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a machine for the purpose herein specified which consists of a base plate or frame 5, which is preferably of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said base plate being oblong and triangular in form and being adapted to be secured to a table or other support by screws or nails passed through holes 6.
Mounted centrally of the base plate or frame 5 is a circular plate 7, and said base plate or frame is provided with a transverse support 8, through which is passed a tubular bearing 9, provided with a base flange or rim 10, which is secured to the cross plate or support 8, and passing through the tubular bearing 9 is a screw or bolt 11, which passes into a bearing 12, secured to the bottom of the circular plate or board 7, and forms a pivot on which said circular plate or board 7 is adapted to turn.
Secured to the larger end of'the base plate or frame 5 are two similar standards 13, which are secured to said base plate or frame by means of screws or bolts 14, and said standards 13 are wider at their lower than at their is a bar 20, which is provided in its opposite.
sides with grooves 21, into which fit corresponding ribs formed in the inner sides of the standards 13, and on the outer side of the bar 20 is formed a rack-bar 22, and secured to the standards 13 is a keeper 23, and said rack-bar moves up and down through said keeper, and the ratchet-teeth 19 on the crank-wheel -17 are adapted tooperate inconnection with the rack-bar 22, so as to raise and lower the bar 20.
The bar 20 is provided with an inwardly and outwardly curved arm 24, which is formed thereon or secured thereto and the free end of which projects tangentially to the circular plate or board 7 and in a direction opposite to that of the wheel 17, and secured to the arm 24 is a hanger 25, on which is formed or to which is secured an arm 26, which is provided with a curved or segmental arm 27, which is curved parallel to the circle of the plate or board 7 and in which is formed a longitudinal slot 28. The arm 24 is also provided with a vertical cross-head 29, into whichis set a plate 30, which is held in place byaset-screw 31, this construction being best shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and the outer end of the plate 30 is provided with a keeper 32, in which is a swiveled rod 33, the lower end of which is provided with a keeper 34, and I also provide a cutting-blade 35, which is provided at its outer end with a pin 36, which passes through the keeper 34, and the inner end of the blade 35 rests against the lower portion of the vertical cross-head 29, as shown in Fig 3, and is provided with a shank 37, which passes through the slot 28 in the curved or segmental arm 27 and on which is secured a crank 38, provided with a handle 39.
Secured to the back of the cutting-blade 35, adjacent to the vertical cross-head 29on the arm 24,is an upwardly-directed lug 40,which is shown in Fig. 3 and which in the position of the parts shown in Fig. 3 overlaps the back of the plate 30, and the lower end of the cross-head 29 is provided with an outwardlydirected lugor projection 41, through which passes a bolt 42, the upper end of which is provided with a head 43, and mounted on said bolt between the shoulder or projection 41 and the head 43 is a spiral spring 44, which forces said head upwardly, and the said head 43 of the bolt 42 is rounded or conical in form in cross-section on its upper side, and the edge of the blade 35, which is curved downwardly, is overlapped thereby, and by means of said head and the upwardly-directed lug or projection 40 on said blade the said blade is held in proper position at all times.
The plate orboard 7 is also provided at regular intervals with handles 45, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The cheese or other article to be cut is placed on the plate or board 7, preferably centrally thereof or in any desired position,
and by turning the crank-wheel 17 the cutting-blade and its support will be caused to rise and fall, as will be readily understood, and in the downward movement of said outting-blade the required portion of cheese will be cut oif. It will also be apparent that by turning the plate or board 7 any amount of cheese may be cut off, and when a cut is made part way through the cheese by depressing the bolt 42 by hearing on the head thereof the cutting-blade 35 may be turned so that the edge thereof will project to the right, and a cut may thus be made horizontally as well as vertically.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for whichit is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein de-' scribed may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
In the operation of the machine, as hereinbefore described, it will be understood that the bar 20 rises and falls between the standards 13, the direction of this movement depending on the direction in which the wheel 17 is turned, and said wheel is provided with a lug or projection 46, which operates in connection with one or more lugs or projections 47, formed on the adjacent standard 13, so'as to limit the movement of said wheel and prevent the teeth 19 thereof from being entirely disconnected from the bar 22, a further objeet of this construction being to prevent the lowering of the cutting-blade too far or to prevent it from bearing on the plate or bar 7.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A machine for cutting cheese, and other articles, consisting of a base plate or frame, a table or board pivotally mounted and adapted to turn thereon, an upright or uprights mounted at one end of said base plate or frame, a vertically-movable rack-bar connected therewith, an arm connected with said rack-bar, and a blade connected with said arm and projecting radially of said pivoted plate or board, and means for operating said rack-bar, said blade being adapted to be turned laterally in its supports, substantially as shown and described.
2. A machine for cutting cheese and other articles, consisting of a base plate or frame, a circular plate or board pivotally mounted thereon, and adapted to turn thereon, an u p- I right at one end of said base plate or frame,
a rack-bar connected therewith, a crankwheel for operating said rack-bar, an arm connected with said rack-bar, a plate connected with said arm and projecting radially of said pivoted plate or' board, and a cutting-blade mount-ed below said plate and supported thereby, said cutting-blade being adapted to be turned in it s supports, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a machine for cutting cheese or other articles,the combination with a'plate or frame, a revoluble plate or board pivotally mounted thereon, and standards mounted on said plate or frame, of a vertically-movable bar supported and guided by said standards, means for elevating and lowering said bar, an arm attached to said bar, a plate supported by said arm, a swivel thereon, a guide 27, a cutting-blade pi votally attached to said swivel and moving laterally in said guide and means whereby said blade may be turned on its supports substantially as described.
4. In a machine for cutting cheese or other articles,the combination with a plate or frame, a revoluble plate or board pivotally mounted thereon, and standards mounted on said plate or frame, of a vertically-movable bar supported and guided by said standards, means for elevating and lowering said bar, an arm attached to said bar, a vertical cross-head thereon, a plate supported by said cross-head, a swivel thereon, a guide 27, acutting-blade pivotally attached to said swivel and movable laterally in said guide, a laterally-extending lug,a vertically-movable spring-actuated bolt mounted therein, an abutment thereon adapted to come in contact with the cutting-blade and means whereby said blade may be turned on its supports, substantially as described.
