Description

G. w.- TRAPHAGEN.
Carriage-Joint'.
Patented Octy 30; 1866.
NFETERS. PHOTOMTHOGRAPHER, WASMINGTDNy D x:
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE GEORGE W. TRAPHAGAN, OF GLENS FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND A. M. DECKER, OF THE SAME PLACE.'
IMPROVEMENT IN SLAT-IRONS FOR CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,322, dated October 30, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TRAPHA-A GAN, ot' Glens Falls, iu the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slat-Irons for Top- Oarriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a side view ot' the lower end of a set of carriage-top bows with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same partly in section to show the construction.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate 4like parts.
My invention has for its object to so iinprove the construction ot' Slat-irons for carriageltops that the work ot' covering the bows may be done by machine instead ot' by hand, as the work is now done; and it cons-ists, trst,'in attaching the bows to the ugers or hinge by screws; and, second, in the combination of the straps and tinger-irons with each other, with the bows, and with the supporting iron or rail, when the said straps and fingerlirons are constructed substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the straps which are attached to the ends ot the bows B. The upper parts, al, of the straps A are made in the form of a half -round tapering strain-and they are secured to the ends ot the bows by screws, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The lower ends, a2, of said straps are made solid, and have a hole formed in them longitudinally, upon the sides of which a screw-thread is cut.
C are the tin ger-irons, upon the upper ends of which are formed screws, which screw into the screw -holes formed in the ends ot' the straps A, as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the lower ends of the inner fingers, c1, are formed eyes, by means of which they are pivoted to ears formed upon the sides of the outer fingers, c2, by rivets passing through said eyes and ears, as shown in Fig. 1. The outer fingers, c2, are made longer than the innern gers, el, and upon their lower ends are formed eyes, by means of which they are pivoted to each other and to the supporting-iron or seat-rail D, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
The leather covers E are made and drawn upon the bows B after the strapsAhave been attached and before the fingers O have been secured into their places. The fingers O are then attached to the straps A, and the inner fingers, cl, securely pivoted to the outer fin gers, c2, by the rivets c3. The outer fingers, c2, are then connected to each other and to the supporting-iron or seat-rail D, and secured in place by the nuts d.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-,is-
1. Attaching the bows to the hinge by screws, substantially in the manner herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of t-he straps A and tinger-irons O with each other, with the bows B, and with the supporting-iron or rail D, when the said straps and finger-irons are constructed substantially as herein shown andA described, and for the purpose set forth.
