PAIL OR PACKAGE LINING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,009, dated November 2, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN V. BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Pail or Package Lining, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved lining for pails and the like, in which merchandisc of various kinds-such as butter,t0bacco, candy, spice, &7C.lS packed or put up for the trade.

I am aware that it is old to line pails and other packages used for this purpose, the gen eral object being to prevent the merchandise contained therein from coming into contact with the pail or other receptacle,as the merchandise is liable to become tainted from such contact and its quality thereby impaired. I do not therefore claim, broadly, as my invention a pail or package lining for the above purpose, but desire to limit myself to the specific lining hereinafterdescribed and claimed, which to the best of my knowledge is new in the art.

The object of the present invention is to provide a pail or package lining of simple and cheap construction which may be conveniently and quickly inserted into said pail or package and which will effectually prevent the contents of the pail or package from coming into contact with said pail or package.

To this end the invention consists of the various features, combinations of features, and details of construction hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings my invention is fully illustrated.

Figure 1 is a sectional View of a pail with my improved lining. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the side section of the lining. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the bottom section of the lining. Fig. 4 is a blank from which the bottom section of the lining-is formed, the dotted lines showing the manner of slitting and folding the preferable form thereof; and Fig. 5 is a plan View of the top section.

Referring now to the drawings, A designates a pail provided with my improved lining, said pail being shown as filled with merchandise, which may be butter, candy, to-

bacco, or other commodity usually packed in this form.

My improved lining consists of three separate and distinct parts, as follows: A bottom section B, a side section C, and a top section D, which I will now describe in order.

The bottom section 13 consists of a flat portion B of the same size and shape as the bottom of the pail or other receptacle, having upturned sides or edges 13 which rest in contact with the sides of said pail or receptacle.

In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown a blank suitable for the formation of the bottom section of my improved lining, which in the preferable construction shown consists of a single piece of suitable material of the same shape, but larger than the bottom of the pail or receptacle for which the said lining is intended. The said blank is folded on the line b, which defines the outline of the flat portion B of said bottom section B to form the sides or upwardly extending edges 13 thereof. This can be done quickly and cheaply by means of suitable stamping or forming dies of proper size and shape, which operate in a familiar manner. Preferably the blank for said bottom section will be slit on lines Z2, which extend from the edges of the said blank to the line b, on which said blank is folded. \Vhen said blank is folded, the edges of the sections formed by the slits b will overlap each other in an obvious manner. If for any reason deemed desirable, my invention contemplates the formation of said bottom section B without the slits Z). In this case when the sides B of said blank are turned up or folded the extra stock therein will form folds or crimps.

The side section 0 of my improved lining consists of a single strip of material C of such size and shape that it will entirely cover the inner sides of the pail or receptacle. The strip 0 is made of such length that the meeting edges thereof will overlap, as shown at c. Preferably said meeting edges of the strip G are pasted or otherwise secured together. This construction insures that none of the contents of the pail or receptacle will work bet-ween the edges of said strip 0' into direct contact with the pail. A further advantage of this construction is that the elasticity of the paper will hold said side section in position against the sides of the pail, thus' avoiding the necessity of holding or otherwise securing said strip in position while the pail is being filled. The use of a strip 0 the sides of which are not secured together is within the contemplation of my invention.

The top section D of my improved lining consists of a single piece of the same shape and size as the top of the pail or other receptacle.

In applying my improved lining to the pail the bottom section B is first placed in position, next the side section (3 is'inserted into the pail so that the upward extension B of the bottom section B will be between said side section 0 and the pail. The pail is then filled, after which the top section D is placed over the contents thereof and the cover secured upon the pail.

My improved lining is made of the same material as linings now in common use, usually paper, either plain or oiled, but any other suitable. or desired material may be used.

I claim 1. A pailor package liningcomprising separate bottom and side sections, the bottom section consisting of a fiat portion of substantially the same shape and size as the bottom of the pail or package and a slitted marginal flange which extends upward between the side section of the lining and the body of the pail or package, substantially as described.

2. Apailorpackageliningcomprisingseparate bottom and side sections, the bottom sections consisting of a fiat portion of substantially the same shape and size as the bottom of the pail or package and a slitted marginal consisting of a continuous strip which extends from the bottom to the top of the pail and the meeting edges of which overlap, substantially I as described.

3. A pail or package lining comprising sepa rate bottom and side sections, the bottom section consisting of a fiat portion of substantially the same shape and size as the bottom of the pail or package and aslitted marginal flange,which extends upward between the side section of the lining and the body of the pail or package and the side section of said lining consisting of acontinuous strip which extends from the bottom to the top of the said pail or package, the meeting edges of which overlap and are pasted or otherwise secured together, substantially as described.

4. Apailorpackageliningcomprisingseparate bottom and side sections, the bottom section consisting of a flat portion of substantially the same shape and size as the bottom of the pail or package and a marginal flange which extends upward between the side section of the lining and the body of the pail, said flange being formed from a lateral extension of the flat portion of said bottom section, which is turned or folded up to form the same, being first slit to facilitate said folding, substantially as described.
