J. A. ROTH .(No Model.)
HORSESHOE.
No. 592,998. Patented Nov. 2, 1897.

UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
JOHN A. ROTH, OF I- IANNIBAL, OHIO.
HORSE'SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,998, dated November 2, 1897. Application n t-r April 13, 1896. Serial No. 587,361. on model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. ROTH, of Hannibal, in the county of Monroe and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Horseshoe,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to horseshoes, and particularly to the improved construction of the heel and toe calks.
The object of this invention is to provide a calk which shall he self-sharpening, so that as the calk is worn down it will always have a sharp edge to prevent slipping.
With these objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in a calk form ed of a thin web or outer portion and a series of ribs or thickened portions upon the interior.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully explained, and then specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 shows the invention in use. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the shoe. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4. is a further section across the calk.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates an ordinary horseshoe, B the toe-calk, and O the heel-calks. The heel and toe calks are similar in construction, except that thetoe-calk is wider. These calks are attached to the shoe in any well-known manner or they may be formed integral therewith.
The construction of the calks in detail consists of the outer or web portion D and the series of ribs or thick portions E upon the interior. The web is comparatively thin and will of course wear down first, and the ribs will thus be left as a series of points to catch a firm hold, thereby preventing the horse from slipping. When the ribs are worn down or smooth, then the web wears again, and so on, thus leaving the points of the ribs exposed, so that, in fact, I have a self-sharpening calk.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a horseshoe having its ends separated at the heel, and provided at the toe with a segmental calk and at each heel end with a calk extending transversely of said end and diagonally with relation to the toe-calk, said toe and heel calks each comprising a comparatively thin vertical web provided on its inner face with a series of vertical ribs broad at the base and tapering gradually therefrom to a point in line with the lower edge of the web, said web and ribs being formed integrally with the shoe in the process of manufacturing the'latter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. ROTH.
Witnesses DAVID THONEN, M. LUDTMAN.
