TROLLEY-WJREHANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,923, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed Tune 28, 1897. Serial No. 642,652. (No model.)
' the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to hangers for electric wires; and its object is to provide an improved form of hanger that may be readily applied to an electric wire without the necessity of soldering or brazing and from which the wire may be readily detached when deemed necessary.
My invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of my device.
The numeral 1 indicates the frame of my device, which is composed of two downwardly-ex tending lateral arms 2 and two downwardlyextending arms 3 at right angles to these. Hanger-arms 4 are formed upon the arms 2. Gripping-jaws 5 are pivotally mounted upon a bolt 6, carried in the frame-arms 3. The lower ends of these jaws are formed to clasp a wire, as indicated at 7. A wedge 8, circular in cross-section, is provided with a screwthreaded portion 9 and head 10. The head 10 fits upon the upper part of the frame and has an arm 11 projecting outward therefrom, said arm being adapted to keep the wedge from rotation when saidhanger is used upon cars. A lock-nut 12 is also held upon this bolt. The upper ends of the gripping-jaws are hollow to receive the end of the wedge. It is now obvious that if'the wedge be inserted between the jaws and screwed down therein said jaws will be forced apart at their upper ends and brought together at the lower portions, thus enabling them to clasp a wire placed between the same firmly.
In the modified form of my device I have shown a form better adapted for use on straight lines and where the hanger is suspended from arms carried on posts. I thus provide a simple and efficient means to accomplish the purpose indicated.
It is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form of my device without departing from the material principles thereof. I do not therefore desire to confine myself to the exact form herein shown and described, but wish to include all such as properly come within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
, 1. In a trolley-Wire hanger, the combination with a frame, of jaws fulcrumed in said frame having upwardly-extending ends and provided at their lower ends with recesses shaped to grip a trolley-wire, a wedge havsaid wedge and provided with a downwardlybent end adapted to drop between the portions of the frame and form a' lock, and a lock-nut carried upon said screw-threaded portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NAPOLEON J. ST. HILAIRE.
