Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. CASH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fluid Pressure Controlled Governors, of which the following is a speci-. floation.
This invention relates to a fluid-pressurecontrolled governor, and comprises a rotary force-pump actuated from the engine or pump to be governed, a main casing or chamber inclosing the rotary pump and having a pipe connecting with a suitably-arranged throttlevalve to be automatically operated by the varying fluid-pressure in said pipe and main casing, and a second casing or receptacle attached to and connected with the main casin g and adapted, primarily, as a reservoir for the oil or other fluid to be fed to the main casing through a free passage and also to receive back from the main casing any surplus fluid through an opening capable of being restricted by adjustment of a valve or screwplug to so regulate the pressure in the main casing or chamber that when the speed of the engine or pump is abnormally increased the fluid-pressure in the said main casing and its pipe connection to the throttle-valve is also increased, thereby tending to close the throttle, and when the speed of the engine or pump is decreased the fluid-pressure in the main casing and pipe to throttle is decreased to permit a further opening of the throttle.
It is the special purpose of my improvements to simplify and cheapen the construction of a rotary fluid-pressure controlled speed-governor for engines and pumps and to provide for reliable automatic action to accord with varying requirements of the engine or pump to be regulated.
My invention consists in the novel features of a rotary fluid-pressure-controlled governor, as hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved speed-governor, the oil-reservoir and plate that separates said reservoir from the main chamber being removed. Fig. 2 shows a modification of the throttle-valve in part sectional elevation. Fig. 3 is a top view of the reservoir for fluid and the casing that incloses the rotary force-pump of the governor, with connections to a moving part of the engine or pump to be governed. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the governor, with connections to engine.
The main casing 1 of the governor, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, is adapted to be secured rigidly to a bracket on the steam-chest, or some other suitable portion of the engine or pump-fram e, by means of screws at 2 2, or elsewhere. In the lower portion of this main casing or cham ber l, as shown in Fig. 1, there is an approximately elliptical space or recess 3, formed by segmental overhanging abutments 4, that project into the said c'asin g from the walls thereof. Within this recess 3 are fitted two intermesh ing hollow gears or pinions 5, that are adapted and arranged to constitute a rotary forcepump for elevating a liquid, such as oil, to the upperchamber 6 of themain casing.
To provide an oil-reservoir for the main casing 1, there is secured to one side of said main casing a second casing, cap, or chamber 7 and an intervening partition-plate 8, Fig. 4, by means of suitable screws 9 9, passing throughthe cap 7 and plate 8 and threaded into the walls of the main casing. At its top the chamber or reservoir 7 is provided with a filling orifice 10, which is preferably threaded, to be closed by a plug or valve. In the partition-plate 8, at the bottom of the oil-reservoir 7, is a feed-opening 11, Fig. 4, leading into the lower central part of the recess 3, in which the gears 5'are fitted, the
rocker arm or lever 17 attached to its outer end. The inner end of this rock-shaft 16 is formed with or carries two arms 18 at nearly right angles to each other. These arms 18 occupy dependent positions, as shown in Fig.
1, and carry at their extremities spring pressed pawls 19, which engage alternately with the teeth of the two hollow gears or pinions 5 and drive them forward to the extent of two teeth for each oscillation of the rockshaft in either direction. The pawls 19 are pivoted to bifurcated ends of the rock-shaft arms 18, which are cored to receive blocks 20, Fig. 1, that bear against the pawls under the pressure of springs 21 at the back of said blocks, so that the said pawls will engage the gears 5 with elastic pressure. 7
The rocker arm or lever 17, on the outer end of the rock-shaft 16, connects by a link 22 with a piston-rod 23 orother reciprocating part of a steam pump or engine. Assuming that the. length of stroke for the pistonrod 23 is from the point 24 to the point 25,
Fig. 1, and that the piston is in the center of its stroke, then when the end of the link 22 has moved to the point 24: or 25 the rocker arm or lever 17 will have traveled the distance indicated between points 26 and 27, and
' this movement, transmitted through the rock-shaft 16 and pawls 19, will'have advanced the gears 5 forward two teeth on each gear or eight teeth on both gears for one complete stroke of the said pump or engine piston.
' From the top of the main governorcasing- 1 there is extended a vertical pipe 28, connecting with a centrally-perforated screwplug 29, Figs. 1 and 2, in the end of a cylinder 30, that is fitted with a plunger 31 for actuating a balanced throttle-valve 32, that is inclosed in a valve-casing 33,which is mounted on the cylinder 30 and adapted to communicate with the steam-supply for the pump or engine to be governed.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the fluid-pressure in the pipe 28 is arranged to I 40, Figs. 1 and 2,-is provided for return to j the oil or fluid reservoir 7 of any slight quanact against the opposing pressure of a spring '34, inclosed in the plunger 31 and surrounding the plunger-stem 35, which is arranged to bear against the stem of the balanced throttle-valve 32 on increase of pressure in the pipe 28, and thereby move the throttlevalve to a closed or closing position.
If desired, there may be employed in connection with the throttling device a pressurer'egulator of the character shown and described in United States Patent N o. 35et,95l, in'whichithe movement of the valve 32, controlling the pressure-supply, is itself controlled by the delivery-pressure of the fluid .acting through port or ports 36, Fig. 1, upon fl-uid pressure acting on the lower end of the plunger. 1

The oil or other liquid in the reservoir 7 is free to flow through the opening 11, Fig. 4, into the space 3, Fig. 1, on thelower side of and between the gears 5 in the main casing. If now the rock-shaft 16 is caused to oscillate, as by means of a lever 17, actuated from piston-rod23, the pawls 19 will have imparted to them a movement indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. Thus the gears 5 will be caused to revolve in the direction of the arrows and the oil between the-gear-teeth, supplied at the center of the space or recess 3 between the lower parts of the gears, will be gradually advanced along the curved abutments 4 and be delivered into the larger chamber 6 of the main casing, and thence, through pipe 28, to
the plunger 31 for actuating the throttlevalve. The surplus of oil or other liquid in the chamber 6 and pipe 28 will escape through the regulated opening 12, Fig. 1, past the adjusting screw-plug 13 and enter again the M lll lili reservoir 7, thence to be pumped over again as the gears 5 continue to revolve.
\Vhen the speed of the steam pump or engine is increased and thereby the speed of "the gears 5 is also increased, the oil or other fluid will be forced into chamber 6 and pipe 28 faster than it can escape through the regulated opening 12. Consequently the pres sure in the chamber 6 and pipe 28 will reach such a point as to drive the piston 31 forward and close or partially close the balanced On the other hand, when the steam pump or engine is running too slow the pressure in chamber 6 of the governor- 'casing will be decreased, the plunger 31 will recede, and the balanced throttle-valve will open proportionately to the decrease of pressure in the governor.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. A governor comprising a main casing or chamber, a force-pump located in said chamber, a rock-shaft actuated from a reciprocating partof the pump or engine to be governed and carrying pawls engaging with said forcepump, a reservoir for fluid-pressure communicating with the main casing or chamber of the governor through a free feed-passage and also through an adj ustably-restricted return- .passage, a cylinder communicating with the main casing or chamber of the governor and provided with a piston or plunger, and a throttlevalve directly actuated from said plunger to control the pressure-supply for the .pump or engine governed, substantially as described.
2. A governor comprising a main casing or chamber, a force-pump composed of inter meshing gears located in said chamber, a rock-shaft actuated from a moving part of the engine or machine to be governed, mech-,
anism carried by said rock-shaft to engage and drive the pump-gears, a reservoir c0mmunieating with the main casing or. chamber through a feed-passage for supply of flnidto the pump and also through a return-passage, a cylinder communicating with the main casing or chamber of the governor and provided with a piston or plunger, and a throttlevalve actuated from said plunger to control the pressure-supply for the engine, pump, or machine to be governed, substantially as described.
3. A governor comprising a main casing or chamber, a force-pump consisting of intermeshing gears mounted in said chamber, a rock-shaft provided with pawls for driving said gears, means for actuating said rockshaft from a moving part of the pump or engine to be governed, a reservoir for fluidpressure communicating with the main casin g or chamber of the governor through a free feed-passage and also through an adjustablyrestricted return passage, and a cylinder communicating with the main casing or chamber of the governor and provided with a plunger for actuating a throttle-valve, substantially as described. A governor comprising a main casing having an approximately elliptical recess therein and a larger chamber communicating with said recess, a force-pump consisting of two intermeshing gears fitted in said elliptical recess, a rock-shaft having arms provided with pawls engaged alternately with the teeth of said gears, means for connecting said rock-shaft with a moving part of the pump or engine to be governed, a reservoir for fluid-pressure communicating with a space below and between the gears through a free feed-passage and also communicating with the larger chamber of the main casing through an adj ustably-restricted return-passage, and a pipe through which the said larger chamber of the said main casing communicates with a cylinder having therein a plunger for actuating a throttle-valve to control the pressure-supply for the pump or engine governed, substantially as described.
5. A governor having a main casing inclosing an approximately elliptical recess and a larger chamber communicating therewith, two intermeshing rotary gears fitted in said recess and constituting a rotary pump for forcing pressure liquid into the larger chamber of said casing, a rock-shaft having arms provided with spring-pressed pawls alternately engaging the teeth of said gears, means for actuating said rock-shaft, pawls and gears from a moving part of the engine or pump to be governed, a reservoir for fluid-pressure communicating with the main casing, a pipe leading from said main casing to a cylinder having a plunger for actuating a throttlevalve by fluid-pressure, and a pipe leading from said cylinder for return of oil or liquid to the reservoir, substantially as described.
6. A governor comprising a casing having therein an approximately elliptical recess, two intermeshing rotary gears fitted in said recess to force oil or liquid upward in said casing, a pipe through which said casing communicates with a cylinder having a plunger to actuate a throttle-valve, a rock-shaft having arms provided with pawls to drive the said gears, an arm or lever on said rock-shaft, and a link connecting said rock-shaft lever with the piston-rod of an engine or pump, substantially as described.
