J. H. A. BEHRENS. COMBINED CANE-AND CAMP STOOL.
NO. 591,549. 1 Patented Oct. 12,1897.
0%: Ii-e2 re m UNIT ST TES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOAOHIM HEINRICH AUGUST BEHRE NS, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
COMBINED CANE AND CAMP-STOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 591 ,549, dated October 12, 1897. Application filedl'ebruary 24, I897. Serial No. 624,818. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OAOHIM HEINRICH AU- GUST BEHRENS, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cane and Camp-Stool, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined cane and camp-stool of that class in which a hollow walking-stick is convert-ible into a chair, the accessories required to transform the stick into a chair being contained within the said walking-stick.
My improvement-s consist in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts pointed out hereinafter and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View of the walking-stick proper. Figs. 2 to 5 are detailed views of the accessory parts which serve to transform the stem of the stick into a chair, and Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the chair as composed with the aid of the walking-stick and the said accessory parts.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The walking-stick proper consists of a hollow stem a, provided with a handle a, Fig. 1, which can be unscrewed therefrom. The hollow ferrule a at the other end of the stem is made sufficiently strong and is provided with two holes a the object of which will be hereinafter explained.
The accessories located in the interior of the stem of the stick, which serve to transform the stick into a chair, comprise a triangular cloth seat I), Fig. 2, one corner of whichis provided with a hook I) and the other two corners with ears or rings b and a crossshaped frame formed by rods or tubes 0, Figs. 3 to 5, pivotally connected together near their middle at c and capable of being folded like scissors. Theupper extremities of these pivotally-connected rods or tubes (3 have hookshaped ends a andengage the ears or rings 1) of the seat b, while the lower extremities are provided at d with suitable connecting means-for instance, folding stays or rails d-the free extremities of which are formed into small hooks (1 adapted to engage with the aforementioned holes a in the ferrule (1 'Above the pivot c of the cross-frame the rods or tubes 0 thereof are provided with semicircular notches c which together form a gap into which the stick or stem at is inserted.
In the operation of assembling the constituent parts to form a chair the cross-shaped frame 0 is opened, Fig.5, and the connecting stays or rails d, which are suitably arranged on the rods or tubes of the cross-frame, are turned down forwardly. (See Fig. 6.) Thereupon the stem a is inserted into the gap formed by the semicircular notches c of the cross-frame c and the hooks d of the connecting rails or stays'd are hooked into the holes a in the ferrule a Fig. 6. The upper ends of the chair-frame thusformed are then connected by the cloth seat in such a manner that the ears or rings 6 thereon engage with the hook-shaped upper ends 0 of the crossframe rods and the hook b on the cloth engages the upper end of the stem of the walking-stick a, which latter serves at the same time as a chair-back or back-support.
The dismembering and stowage of the parts composing the chair is effected in the inverse order. The accessories-namely, the crossframe and the cloth seatare folded up and inserted into the interior of the stem. When the handle is screwed in place, the device can be used as a walking-stick.
' Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a combined cane and camp-stool, the cane provided with a perforated ferrule in combination with two'pivoted legs adapted to clamp the cane above their pointof connection, and a brace pivoted at theend of each leg and adapted to engage the perforations in the ferrule, substantially as set forth.
' 2. In a combined cane and camp-stool, the
hollow cane in combination with a pair of legs said rods with the ferrule, and a foldable seat adapted to be connected to the upper ends of the cane and rods, and said seat and rods adapted to be contained within the cane, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a combined cane and camp-stool, the cane provided with a perforated ferrule, in combination with two legs pivoted together, a cut-away portion in each leg above the pivot, said cutaway portions combining to form a seat and clamp for the cane, braces foldable upon the legs and adapted to engage the perforations in the ferrule, and a detachable triangular seat, said legs, braces and seat adapted to be contained within the cane, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 6th day of February, 1897.
JOAOIIIM HEINRICH AUGUST BEIIRENS.
