SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,888, dated September 28, 1897'.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI B. HAYES, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Cutter-Heads for PlaninglWIachines and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cutters or planers for planing-machines;
The invention consists of a cutter-head or planer comprising a core or shaft portion,
fixed knives mounted upon the same, movable knives also mounted upon the same, and
a longitudinal screw within said core for. moving the movable knives longitudinally.

.The core or shaft'A is suitably reduced at core, but cannot move diametrically away from the same. The said core or; shaft A is provided with a central longitudinal passage a, in which is mounted the screw-D. This screw is formed with a squared end cl for re ceivin g a wrench to revolve it and is held in position by a nut d,that screws into the end of the core and bears against a collar 61 fast on the said screw. The screw passes through a block (1 that is adapted to slide longitudinally in a slot d of the core or shaft. The slides E E, which are located upon opposite sides of the core, are connected to the opposite sides of this block d so as to move therewith when tliescrew'is rotated.
Bevel-cornered cutting-knives C O are mounted upon each of the slides E E by bolts 0 c, that pass through slots 0 0' cut therein. By means of this latter construction the knives may be adjusted back and forth upon their respective slides so as to cut to a greater These knives are set in laterally-extending .grooves 0 0 having inclined 4 bottom surfaces formed in the slides E E, and
have inclined bottom surfaces, which cause one edge of the knife to sink lower than the other. The effect of this latter construction, when the cutter is in operation, is to cut a shearing cut on an incline at each edge of the panel, and thus form a wedge-shaped edge on each side of the finished panel.
Knives 0 0, similar in shape to knives O O, are preferably provided with thickened portions upon their under sides to raise the cutting edges so that they will be upon the same plane with the cutting edges of the knives U0, and are mounted upon the same sides of the core as said knives C C, but at'the opposite ends from the same. These knives are mounted directly upon the core in grooves similar to those occupied by the knives O C. These knives are provided with slots 0 through which pass pins or bolts 0 to adjust ably attach them to the core.
The object in having the knives C C longitudinally adjustable upon the core or shaft is to accommodate different widths of panels by increasing or decreasing the space between said knives. Longitudinal cutting-knives B B are secured upon the sides of the core not occupied by the knivesC and C by bolts b, which pass through slots Z2, cut therein to permit the back and forward adjustment of the knives. These knives extend over the full length of the middle rectangular portion of the core, lapping over the edges of the slides E E and projecting sufficiently beyond the edges of the same to form free cutting edges.
lhe knives C and C of course extend to a greater degree over the edge of the core than. the knives B, as their office requires them to cut deeper into the lumber than said latter knives.
The great advantages of this cutter-head or planer are that it can be adjusted, to the desired width of panel by a single adjustment of the screw which operates the adjustable knives.
An inclined shearing cut is also secured by the disposition of the movable knivesuponthe inclined bottoms of the grooves in the sliding blocks. One side of each of these knives being lower than the other, the higher side will be farther from the center of rotation andwill therefore strike the material first, the rest of the cutting edge following as, the rotation ad vances.
All parts of the cutter-head or planer may also readily be taken apart for repairs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1; A cutter-head or planer for a planingmachine comprising a shaft forminga core, fixed knives and movable knivessecuredupon the same and a rotatable screw lying in the,
axis of' said shaft and a diametrical block, connecting the screw to said. movableknives for moving them longitudinally thereon, substantially as described.
2. A cutter-head or planer for a. planing. machine comprising a shaft forming a core provided with a central longitudinal slot, a block adapted to be adjusted in said slot loncarrying plates secured to the opposite edges of said block and knives mounted upon said plates, and said shaft, substantially as described.
3. A cutter-head or planer for a planingmachine comprising a shaft forming a core, a rotatable screw lying in the axis of said shaft, adjustable knife-carrying plates connected to said screw so as to be adjusted longitudinally of said core and provided with grooves having. inclined bottom surfaces, said shaft alsohaving grooves provided with inclined bottom surfaces and knives mounted in the grooves of said plates and shafts whereby they are inclined laterally so as to present an inclined cutting edge to the lumber being operated upon, substantially as described.
4, A cutter-head or planer for a planingi laehinecomprising a shaft forming a core, a rotatable screw'lying in the axis of the'said shaft, slides connected to said; screw, so asto be movedv longitudinally of the core upon the rotation of said screw and knives mounted upon said slides, whereby knives on opposite sides of the shaft may be adjusted simultaneously and at one operation substantially as described.
5. A cutter-head for a planing-machine comprising a shaft consistingof an integral core and journals, knives secured tosaidcore, a, screw passing through a. journal and. havin gits axis parallel with the axis of saidshaft and means connecting said screw with some of the knives for adjusting them,vsubstantially as described.
6. A cutter-head, or planer for a. planingmaehine comprising a shaft forming a, core andjournalsintegral therewith, knives. se cured to said core, a screw passing through one of said journals and having itsaxisparalleLwithI-heaxis of, said shaft, means for. adjusting said screw at the end of saidjournal and means connecting the screw with the knives for adjusting them, substantially as described.
