G. SCHEID. SPINDLE. No. 590,378. Patented Sept. 21,1897.

A BY Jwhvfi ATTY'S.'

UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
CARL SOHEID, OF HARRISON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE DRAPER COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE. I
SPINDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,378, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed April 19, 1397;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL SCHEID, a citizen of the United States, residingin Harrison, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spindles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clearjand exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a spindle-supporting tube with means for adj ustably mounting said spindle on the spindle-rail and at the same time permitting said spindle to be set at an oblique angle to the said rail.
The invention consists in the details of construction, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the spindlerail, in which is mounted a spinning-spindle provided with my improvements; and Fig. 2, a sectional view on the line as 00 of Fig. 1.
In said drawings, a represents the spindlerail, provided with the vertical bore or opening a, in which is loosely mounted the tube 7), having the annular flange c, resting on the top of the spindle-rail, and containing stepand-bolster bearing for the spindle d. The latter is provided with the sleeve 6 and whirl f, through which motion is imparted to the said spindle.
On the lower portion of 'the tube 1) is adjustably arranged a ring or collar 1', by means of the set-screw i, and bears against the spiral spring m, surrounding said tube and bearing with its upper portion against the under side of the rail a or against an intermediate Serial No. 632,742. (No model.)
metallic washer n, all as clearly shown and of the usual and well-known construction.
The annular flange c of the tube b is penetrated by a series of set-screws g, arranged vertically, and preferably in a triangle, and engaging with their lower ends recesses or sockets g, arranged in the top portion of the spindle-rail.
The elasticity of the spindle d is regulated, by means of the washer i, in the usual manner, while the relative position between the spindle (Z and the rail to is regulated by means of the set-screws g-that is to say, the spindle d can easily be set at an oblique angle to the spindle-rail by simply operating one or more of said set-screws, the latter raising or lifting the corresponding side or portion of the annular flange 0, as will be manifest.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. The combination with the spindle-rail, provided with a vertical bore or opening, of a tube penetrating said opening and loosely mounted on the spindle-rail, and provided with an annular flange above said rail, a ring or washer adj ustably arranged on the lower portion of said tube, a spiral spring surrounding said tube and intermediately arranged between the spindle-rail and said washer, a series of set-screws penetrating the annular flange of said tube and bearing on the spindle-rail, and a whirl-driven spindle in said tube, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes .described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of April, 1897.
CARL SCHEID.
Witnesses ADAM ScHEID, WM. D. BELL.
