llNiTED STATES ROBERT I-I. POSEY, OF MANOR, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO W. B. REOTOR, OF SAME PLACE.
NEEDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,193, dated September 14, 1897.
Application filed June 1, 1897. Serial No. 639,029. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT H. PosEY, of Manor, county of Travis, and State of Texas, have inventedanew and useful Needle; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the figures marked on the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective View of the needle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
The object of my improvement is to provide a ready means for cutting the twine, thread, or cord carried by a needle. It is particularly adapted for-baling-needles-, although I contemplate its use for all needles and for all purposes for which my invention may prove applicable.
In the drawings, 1 represents a needle. This particular needle is a baling-needle, and is provided with a flattened curved point or front portion 2, in one of the blades of which I form an incision 3, formed as shown and described. This incision 3 is formed somewhat like the barb of an arrow, the cut in the side of the needle being inclined rearwardly toward the outer edge and having one of the sides of the incision 3 sharpened to constitute a twine-cutting edge.
It should be understood that my invention is not confined to the particular form of needle shown in the drawings. The incision does not interfere with the forward motion of the needle in sewing or baling, and the end of the cord or twine is severed with facility by simply slipping it within the incision and pulling the needle against the cord, thereby readily cutting it. The form and shape of the twine-cutting attachment may be varied.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A needle provided with an incision or slot located near the point of the needle extending out to the exterior of the needle and having a cutting edge formed within the sides of said incision.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT H. POSEY.
