SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,796, dated March 1, 1898. Application filed May 24, 1897- Seral No. 637,951. (No model.)y
T all whomit may concern:
Beit known that I, HARVEY G. RUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hightstown, in the county of Mercer and .State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cutting or Dividing Pills or Pellets, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will venable those skilled in the art to 1o which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionA relates to devices for cutting or dividing pills or pellets into proper size beforeA they are rolled into a round form; and the object thereof is to provide an irn- VI5 proved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is provided with a plurality of blades and with means for adjusting the same with reference to each other and at thesame time always zo` holding said blades in proper relative position or so, that the spaces between the same will be even or equal. 1n the drawings forming part of Athis specification the separate parts of 'my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in'each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I-providean apparatus of the class herein specified, which consists of two horizontal and parallel side bars 4o 5 which are'connected at one end by a crossbar 6 and at the opposite end with triangular plates 7.
The side bars 5 are composed of two separate parts, (shown in Fig. 3,) and one of the 4`5- triangular end plates 7 is of the same thickness as the cross-bar 6 at the opposite end,
' while the other is much thinner, as is also shown in Fig. 3. The inner sides of the wider ends of the triangular plates 7 are cut away 5o at an angle, as shown at 8 in Fig. 1.
Mounted transversely of the frame and between the separate parts4 of the horizontal side bars 5 thereof are longitudinally movable transverse bars 9, which project at each side ofsaidvframe and are provided at one end with blades 10, and these longitudinally-movable bars 9 are of the same thickness as the end plate or bar 6 of the frame, and enough of said bars are employed to ill when close together about one-half of the frame. I also mount in said frame a plurality of longitudinal bars 11, which equal in number the transverse bars 9 and which extend longitudinally of the frame and which exactly fill the space between the side bars 5, and each one of the longitudinal bars 11 is connected with one of the transverse and longitudinally movable bars 9, as shown at 12, this connection being preferably a rigid connection, and by means of this arrangement the line of connection between the horizontal bars 11 and the transverse longitudinally-movable bars 9 is a diagonal line' extending from one side of the` frame across the same Vand terminating at about the middle of the frame on the opposite side, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1, this description being' applicable to the device when the transverse and longitudinally-movable bars 9 are in the position shown in Fig. 1 or adjacent to the end of the frame in which the lplate or bar 6 is placed.
Pivotally connected with that side of the frame adjacent to the blades 10, as shown at 13, is a lever 111, which is provided with acentral longitudinal slot' 15, and each of the longitudinal bars 11 is'V provided with a pin 16, and said pins 16 project 'through the slot 15 in the lever 14, and when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 the pins 16 also occupy a diagonal line which extends in a direction opposite to that of the line of the con-` nection of the longitudinal bars 11 with the transverse bars 9.
The operation of this device will be readily 14 the transverse and longitudinally-movable bars 9 'maybe forced into the position shown in Fig. 1, in which the transverse bars are IOO close together, or said transverse and longitudinally-movable bars 0 may be moved into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which they are separated, and the space between the blades 10 may thus be enlarged or lessened, as desired, it being understood that the friction of the pivotal connection of the lever 14 with the frame of the apparatus may be made such that the parts will remain in any posi* tion in which the lever 14 is set.
One of the transverse bars f), preferably at about the middle of said bars, is provided with a guide or brace 17, which is secured thereto and which fills the space between the longitudinal bar 11 connected therewith and the adjacent side of the frame, the object of this brace or guide being to retain the parts in proper relative position, and the longitudinal rod or bar ll adjacent to the side of the frame over which the free end of the lever 14 projects also serves to keep the longitudinal bars 11 in proper position, as will be readily understood.
It will be understood that the blades 1() serve to cut the material from which the pills or pellets are made, and these blades may be of any desired width in cross-section, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which is well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may he made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
The end plates need not be triangular in form, but I prefer this construction in order that said plates may form coils for the longitudinal bars 11; but it will be understood that the entire frame may be rectangular in form, in which event the end plates '7 may be made as wide as desired, and the inner edges thereof may be cutaway at one side, as shown at 8, so as to provide greater space for the movement of the lever 14.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described device for cutting material for pills or pellets into proper sizes, said device consisting of an oblong frame in which is mounted a plurality of transverse and longitudinally-movable rods or bars, and a corresponding number of longitudinal and longitudinally-movable rods or bars, said longitudinal and transverse rods or bars being connected, and said transverse rods or bars being provided at one end with cutting-blades, and said frame being provided with a lever which is pivotally connected With one side thereof, and in which is formed a longitudinal slot, and said longitudinal bars being each provided with a pin which projects through said slot, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described apparatus for cutting the material from which pills or pellets are formed into proper sizes, said apparatus consisting of an oblong frame, in which are mounted a plurality of transverse and longitudinally-movable bars, each of which is provided at one end with a cutting-blade, said frame being also provided with a corresponding number of longitudinal and longitudi nally-movable rods or hars, said longitudinal rods or bars and said transverse rods or bars being connected as described, and means for operating said longitudinal bars, substantially as shown and described.
