STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,709, dated March 1, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX JAHN, asubject ofv the King of Saxony, residing at Lei-psic-Plagwitz, Saxony, Germany, have made a new and useful Improvement in Stoves, of which the following is a fulland clear specification.
My invention'relates especially to improvements upon a patent granted to me, No. 522,015, dated June 26, 1894, wherein a cen-A tral air-tube is encircled spirally by alternate heating and air conduits communicating, respectively,with the fire-chamber of the stove and the surrounding exterior air of the room to be heated; and the improvement consists particularly in the arrangement of thel rechamber in connection with the central and` spiral heating-conduits, in the air and draft regulating appliances connected. therewith, and in means for discharging and circulating theVhighly-heated and the partially-consumed gases and thoroughly commingling them in their exit from and around the re-chambem.

' The stove herein shown is built up of 'a series of rin g-sections forming the heating-drum A and of other sections hereinafter described forming the base B, which comprises the body ofthe stove, a central section of the base providing a firechamber C, which is of novel construction, and a Vgrate and ash-pan section D, forming the bottom ring, which rests upon the foot-ring E and may be set or connected therewith in any well-known or preferred manner.
The heating-drum A has a central air-fine F, the outer surface of which has a double series of ledges ff, and the inner surface of the several sections of said heating-drum have corresponding ledges a ci, which are adapted,

The space between said hot-air passages being divided by vertical partitions h', as shown in Fig. 3, one of the aforesaid passages forms the spiral combustion-conduit G, connected to the base and lire-chamber, and the other forms the spiral air-heating conduit H, having inletapertures Hl` to receive and similar outletapertures H2 to discharge in horizontal planes the exterior air of the room'after presenting it to the surfaces of the spiral heating-conduit H in a simple, rapid, and effective manner, the partitions h' within the air-passage .serving to throw the air out of the drum after it has passed once around the central airue.
The central air-nue F is supported at its lower end upon the horizontal projection la of a feed-spout K, connected to the fire-chamber, and is supported at the top on an inner projection a of the cap-section A,wh ich latter fits upon the upper section of the heatingdrum A and in turn supports the dome-section A2 of said cap, which has a central opening flange a2, upon which is fitted the stovepipe A2, -which carries off the smoke or inal products of combustion. As shown clearly in Fig. 1 and by detail in Fig. 2, the domesection A2 has openings a2 on one side to receive the smoke from the combustion-conduit G, and openings a4 on the opposite side to receive the heated air both from the central airilue F and also from the top extremity of the spiral heating-conduit H, the said dome-section being provided with apertures a5 therein, through Which the heated air is conducted into the room.
The bottom plateA g2 of thesmoke-conduit G rests upon the ledge k2 of the feed-spout K and passes around over a vertical partition h4 of a horizontal base-plate B4, which ts in the base-cap B5, the latter serving to connect the upper section of the base B with the'lower section A5 of the heating-drum A, and -also serving to support the horizontal projection la of the feed-spout. Suitable apertures b5 IOO in the base-plate B4 admit smoke from the combustion-conduit of the base to the combustion-conduit of the drum, and also allows the smoke which passes through the small central channel 7s of the feed-spout to enter the combustion-conduit G of the drum. A draft-regulating damper I, to fit the rectangular cross-section ofthe combustion-conduit G,is supported therein by a spindle g,by which it is regulated.
The feed-spout K of the tire-chamber C extends angularly downward from the top I) of the base-cap B5 and its junction with the foot of the heating-drum and is closed outwardly by a door or cover G2 and has a small central channel k within the horizontal projection 7c, upon which the air-iiue F is supported, the central channel 7c serving to conduct the Iirst products of combustion beneath the base of said air-Hue to the combustion-conduit G, a similar superimposed channel k2 connecting the base of the air-heatin g conduit H with the air-iiue F and also with an air-jacket C around the fire-chamber C,whieh extends to the base thereof near the fioor and carries off and heats the coldest air of the room from the bottom of the stove, as will hereinafter appear. The fire-chamber C being double-walled, the outer shell C will not be heated to a white or equally extreme heat, and the exterior shell of the base B will be heated to a degree still less eX- treme, a spiral hot-air channel B between the base and lire-chamber, formed by the inner sheet-metal shell B2,servin g to effectively and rapidly carry on the circulation and complete commingling of the gases and products of combustion,wl1ich is furthered materially by means of heat-discharge openings C2 C2 in the upper part of the fire-chamber and other heat-discharging openings C3 C in the lower part of said fire-chamber. The walls of these openings are inclined upwardly to better carry off the combustion products and also to prevent the coal from falling out through them from the fire-chamber.
Air is admitted to the tire-chamber C through the base B by means of a top draftchannel B3, covered by a screw-regulated register-plate b3, a middle draft-channel B4, covered by a hinged door having a supplemental register-plate b4 opening a short distance above the grate M, hereinafter' described, and a bottom draft-channel B5, also having a register-plate b5 and opening in the ash-pan D below the said grate.
The grate comprises the basket-section M2 and a grate portion proper resting upon the flanges m6, the basket-section and grate proper having handles m" and m5, by which they are rotated and reciprocated, respectively, in any well-known or preferred manner.
Suitable air channels or openings b in the base admit air from the room into the hot-air channel B', and similar openings D7 at the foot of the base admit cold air from near the Hoor by means of lateral channels bs into the air -jacket surrounding the fire chamber,
stantiallyas follows: The lire-chamber is rst filled with coal through the feed-spout nearly or quite to the top thereof and settling within the basket-grate and upon the shaking-grate is provided with an extended grate-surface. The re when first kindled receives air from the register below the grate, ,and the first smoke and products of combustion pass of directly and rapidly through the channel leading from the feed-spout at the top of the firechamber to the central air-flue to the chimney, the damper in the spiral combustion-conduit being properly regulated. After the coal has become thoroughly ignited the less perfectly consumed gases pass out through the upper discharge-openings C2 CZ of the tire-chamber, and the more highly heated gases and iiame pass out from the {ire-chamber through the openings C3 C3 thereof, and eommingling, as shown by the arrows in Fig. l, are conducted together through the hot-air channel B of the base, and thence joining the irst products of combustion issuing from the channel of the feed-spout provide a final and practical combustion of said gases, the large grate area adding greatly tothe completeness of the combustion. The top draft-channel permits the air to be supplied and heated at the upper part of the {ire-chamber, and the middle draftchannel, the opening of which is regulated both by a register-plate and a door, admits air to the lower part or base of the fire-chamber, and when the full door of the latter is opened will greatly accelerate the combustion and heat of the coals Within the fire-pot.
All the conditions required for slow and perfect combustion of every pound of fuel are thus provided, and an extended grate-surface as well as an extended heating-surface, all under complete control, will in a most perfect manner cause a rapid circulation both of the cold air from the floor directly to the most highly heated channels to the warmer strata above7 and also of the intermediate zone, which is conducted, as shown by the arrows in horizontal lines, through the heating-drum and over the extended spiral surfaces of its air-heating conduit and discharged through numerous openings extending from the foot to the cap of the heating-drum. The air from the upper part of the room above the base portion of the stove passes into the spiral airconduit H on one side, and after passing once around is intercepted by the vertical partitions 7L and discharged4 at the opposite side thereof. Vhen the fire burns briskly, the central air-ue F becomes heated and either all or a portion of the air admitted to lower spiral air-conduit H is drawn into said lue through the channel k2 of the feed-spout, while any surplus air or air not drawn into the air-Hue F will pass out into the room through the apertures in the drum leading from the spiral air-conduit. In a stove,the combination with the base, of the fire-pot contained therein, and a spiral plate providing a hot-air channel, between ro them, the said fire-pot being provided with Y discharge-openings respectively above and below said spiral plate to cause the commingling of the upper and lower products of comlbnstion from the fire-chamber, and a heatingdrum leading from the said hot-air channel,
substantially as described.
2. In a stove, the base in combination with a double-walled fire-chamber contained therein, to provide an annular hot-air channel bezo tween them, the said fire-chamber being provided with heat and smoke discharge passages having upwardly and outwardly inclined walls to prevent the coal from falling through them from the iir'e-chambervand eX- tending through the said annular hot-air chamber, substantially as described.
3. A stove comprising a base having a firechamber, a spiral air-jacket extending from the foot thereofto a discharge-opening at the 3o top thereof, in combination with a heatingdrum comprising a spiral combustion-conduit leading from the discharge-opening of the base to the top of the drum, a series4 of spiral air-heating chambers interposed between the oonvolutions ofthe combustion-conduit having oppositely-disposed apertures in the outer.
Walls of the said chambers to allow theair to pass transversely into and out of said chambers, and a stovepipe leading from the, combustion-conduit, substantially as described.
4. In a stove the combination with a base and inner fire-chamber of a central air-tube, a spiral combustion-conduit leading from said chamber to the discharge opening, and a feed-funnel leading through the walls of the base and nre-chamber having a horizontal pipe leading therefrom to the base of the spiral combustion-conduit, substantially as described;

The combination with a stove-base, of a central fire-chamber, a funnel-section having a horizontally-projecting pipe or conduit, a pipe-base thereon and a base-cap provided with a seat for supporting the drum formed integral, a spiral heating and a spiral combustion conduit comprising the drum supported upon said funnel-section with the base of the spiral combustion-conduit leading from the horizontal pipe oi' the funnel, and acentral air-pipe supported upon the said funnel-section and supported Within the drum, substan- MAX JAHN.
