B. ROSS.
PIPE WRENCH.
No. 599,673. Patented Feb. 22,1898.
avwewboz Barney Row (a? ax amwm wwvwooao UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
I BARNEY ROSS, OF PAINESVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO FRANK SWEETE, OF SAME PLACE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,673, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed July 22, 1897. Serial No. 645,577. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.1
Be it known that I, BARN'EY Ross, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Painesville, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I .do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, whicl1 form a part'of this specification. Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view of a wrench embodying myinvention and shown as in operation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same with the pipe and a portion of the chain removed.
This invention is designed to provide a pipewrench of improved character; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a bar or lever of suitable character. B B designate two similar parallel jaw-plates which are pivoted to the said bar or lever near one .end thereof. Said jaws are of general triangular form, with the apex portions at the pivot end. Extending into the wider or free end portion of each jaw is aV-shaped recess O,'whose lateral walls are toothed or serrated,as indicated at c. D designates a chain which is secured at one end to the bar or lever A at a point below the pivot a, which secures the said jaws.
E designates a clevis device which is pivoted to the bar or lever at about the same distance from the pivot a as the point where the chain is connected thereto, but upon the opposite side of or above said pivot.
The pins or cross-bars D of the chain or of a portion thereof are extended. laterally at each end beyond the side links or bars, as shown at d, and the side plates of the clevis E are formed-with seats E to receive such lateral extensions or projections.
F is a pin or rivet which rigidly connects the two jaws B B.
The operation is as follows: Thechain is passed around the pipe between the two jaws in the manner clearly shown in the drawings, and its free end portion is engaged with the clevis E by means of the projections 01 and seats E. The bar or lever A is then moved in the direction indicated by the arrow. Inasmuch as the two end portions of the chain are connected to said lever upon opposite sides of the pivot a, it takes up the slack from both sides at once and with a short movement of the lever, and the harder the lever is pulled the tighter becomes the grip upon the pipe, making a bind of such character as to render slipping impossible, while, owing to the fact that the pressure upon the pipe is equal all around, there is no danger of injuring or crushing it.
The Wrench will operate upon pipes of any diameter from the smallest size up to the largest which the jaws will receive. It can also berused in close places.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pipe-wrench, comprising a bar or lever, a pairof parallel jaws pivoted to one end portion thereof, and having each a V-shaped recess extending into its free end, a chain attached to the end portion of said bar or lever below the pivot of the jaws and between said jaws, a clevis pivoted to said bar or lever at a point above the said pivot and having seats or hooks which are designed to be engaged by projections of the chain, substantially as specified.
2. In a pipe-wrench, the combination with the bar having the parallel, pivoted, recessed jaws, and the clevis pivoted to said bars and having seats therein, of the chain connected to said bar at one end and having its crossbars or pins provided with laterally-projecting ends designed to engage the seats of the clevis, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BARNEY ROSS.
