Sl/VEN A. PETERSSON, OF NEYY YORK, N. Y.
FLOR=PLANENG MACHENE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,531, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed March 3 1 1 896.
To ctZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that 1, Swan A. Pnrnnsson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor-Planing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved contrivance of a rotary planing-tool and means for operating it on a truck movable about the floor for planing the surface of the floor, as hereinafter described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine with a part broken out. Fig. 2 is a plan view with a part sectioned off horizontally. Fig. 3 is a detail in front elevation. Fig. 4: is a plan View of the planing-tool detached from the machine, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the planing-tool.
I provide asuitable truck, as the bed-frame a, mounted on small wheels b, on which it can be moved slowly over the floor to be planed, and preferably gear one of the axles c of the truck with the shaft cl of an electric motor 6, mounted 011 the platform g to move the frame along as the work progresses, said motor being also employed to operate the planing-tool, as will appear farther on.
The motor is to be provided with electric conductors adapted to connect with any available servioe-feeder and allow the machine to be moved about the floor.
For guiding the machine by the front axle c, which is to be pivoted as usual in such trucks, a vertical shaft h is provided, having a hand-wheel i for turning it, with a cord or chain j, connected to a pulley on the lower end of the shaft and passing over guide-pulleys Z to the ends of the axle, respectively, suitable for turning the machine according as the hand wheel is turned one way or the other.
The planing-tool consists of a head-piece 112, having a shank n, adapted to be inserted in a socket in the lower end of a mandrel o and be secured by a set-screw in the common way of connecting such tools, said head being in this example of my invention made with four plain sides, to each of which is attached a radially-projecting plane-bit q, having the proper inclination for planing the surface of the floor, and provided with the usual break-irons s, which radiate therefrom and are formed integral with the head 3 but the fierial No. 585,595. (No model.)
tool may be constructed with any approved number of bits. The tool-carrying mandrel -0 is mounted vertically in the extremities of two arms 25, which are mounted on the vertical pivot a to swing from side to side of the frame just back ofthe front axle. For thus swinging the planer a grooved hand-wheel b is mounted on the top of the frame at the center of the front end, from which a cord (1, suitably coiled around it, extends in opposite directions over guide-pulleys e to the free end of one of the arms t, to which the ends of the cord are respectively connected suitably to swing the planing-tool as desired. The pivot to is also a rotating shaft, to which mo tion is communicated from the motor 6 by a belt o,and from which the mandrel 0 is driven by the belt w.
The mandrel 0 is vertically movable in its hearings in the arms i and at the upper end coupled by the clutch a: with the adj ustingscrew carried in the yoke z, and having a hand -crank a for working it to press the planer down to its work or raise it up, as required.
The truck-frame may of course be pushed along the floor by hand, or it maybe geared with a hand-crank, so as to be moved by turning the crank.
I claim- The combination in a floor-planing machine of the truck movable along the? floor upon a hind axle in fixed bearings and a centrally-pivoted front axle, the floor-planing tool carried on the lower end of a vertical rotating mandrel located behind and in close proximity to the front axle, in horizontallyswinging supporting-arms and geared with motor apparatus located on the rear of the truck, the clutch and adj usting-screw on the top of the mandrel, the shaft geared by the pulley on its lower end and a cord or chain with the ends of the front axle respectively for guiding the truck, and the hand-wheel and cord geared with the vibratory arms for causing the lateral movements of the planing-tool, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
Signed at New York city, in the county and State of New York, this 15th day of February, A. D. 1896. v
SW'EN A. PETERSSON.
