IMPROVEMENT IN ENVELOPES.

SPECIFICATION- TO ALL WHOM IT .MAY GQNCERN:

Be it known that 'I, RICHARD MAGEE, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Envelopes for letters and circulars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and igures of reference marked thereon:

The principal object of my invention is to afford an envelope for printed circulars or letters which will ensure the retention of the enclosure, and at the same time admit of the legal inspection which is required of the postmaster tol ascertain whether the said enclosure contains written matter. It consists substantially, as hereinafter described and specified, in so cutting, gumming, and folding the paper blank as to produce an envelope for use that will be closed at its top and bottom, and open at both ends; thc said ends being gummed on one inner side, and the other provided with a iap gummed in-like manner, so that either can be cemented to the enclosure. The drawing represents a blank as cut out and* gummed ready for folding and pasting, A being the face portion, B the backportion, al the top-lap, a a2 the side or end-laps. The face and the back, together with the laps, are cut in one piece, and so that-when the two rirstnientioned parts (A and B) are folded together (on the dotted line 1) the top edge b1 and the two end edges b2 b2 of the portion B will come, respectively Where the dotted flines 2 and 3 3 are seen in the drawing, thus leaving the top-lap (al) and the end laps (a2 a2) projecting about a quarter of an inch, more or less; but previously to the folding described I gum and let dry in the usual manner the inner sides of the two end-laps, (a2 (12,) and also in like manuel' the two inner sides of the end edges 4 4 of the part B. The front and back being folded 'as before stated, I secure them permanently together by folding and pasting the lap al down upon the back, or the back down upon the folded lap, as may be preferred, The two end-laps (a2 a2) I now fold down upon the back, (13,) thus completing the envelope for sale.

It will be seen that as the two ends of this envelope are left open, the letter to be enclosed can be readily introduced at either end, and afterward be safely or permanently secured therein by moistening the gum on the ends 4 4 of the back (BQ so as to cause the said` enclosure to adhere thereto on pressing the parts together, and then moistening the gum on the laps a? 12a-nd pressing them down upon the outer side of the back, thus closing the envelope; or, if it be preferred tov have the laps a2 a2 withinthe envelope, the former may be moistened, tucked in, and pressed fast to the enclosure, and then the back (B) stuck down upon the backs of the laps a2 a2, thus also closing the envelope.

By turning inward all the laps, (al a2 112,) so that they shall be between the parts A and B, as described, two faces will be afforded on the envelope-one for the address, the other for an advertisement.

Printed circulars within open envelopes of the old construction are very liable to fall out and become lost in the mails, but this cannot occur if the present envelope be legitimately used for the purpose of mailing them, because either of its ends will afford a sure means of attaching the circular, whilst the other end is left open for the legal inspection; vand in regard to a letter, which can be cemented fast at both of its ends in closing the envelope, the security is twofold.

I do not desire to claim the making'of an envelope so that it shall presentJ two faces or fronts, each having a smoth, unbroken surface; nor do I desire to claim any particular width for the end flaps; but having fully described the nature of my improvement, :and pointed out its utility, what I claim as new therein of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An envelope, for use, closed at its top and bottom, and openvat both ends, one of the inner sidesA of eacl of the said ends being gummed, and the other provided with a flap gummed in like manner, so that either cai be cemented`to the enclosure, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
