Description

s. .SAFFORD.
Cattle Stanchionr No. 59,662. Patented Nov. 13, 1866.
Win/arses. @4/
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LARKIN S. SAFFORD, OF HOPE, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STANCHIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,662. dated November 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LARKIN S. SAFFORD, of Hope, in the county of Knox and State of Maine, have invented a new and improved mode of tying up horned cattle in the tieup of the barn or stable; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and which makes a part of this specification.
The letter A represents the top and bottom timbers to which the stanchions in a common cattle tie-up are fastened.
H represents two upright planks on either side of the creature when tied, of proper width, and fastened, at the upper and lower ends thereof, to said top and bottom timbers A, on the side next the crib, by bolts or nails.
B is an upright piece of plank or timber, of sufficient size and strength to hold the creature to be tied or fastened, and fastened at its upper and lower ends into said timbers A by the pins F, which are round, so as to allow said plank B to turn in or out-that is, toward or from the crib-as the creature when fast ened, as hereinafter described, may desire, and may be of iron or other metal, or of wood, as strength or convenience may require, and are inserted into the ends of said plank B, or, if made of wood, may be made by so scoring off said plank B as to leave said pins or pivots at the ends thereof as a part of it, and which, however made, are to be inserted into holes in said timbers A near the edge of the left-hand plank H, next to the creature when fastened, as represented in the drawing and model.
0 are four pieces of wood, of proper size and strength, two of which are fastened to either end of said plank B, on opposite sides of said plank, by bolts of wood or iron, or other metal, through said pieces 0 and through said plank B.
Between the right-hand ends of the lower pieces, 0, is fastened the upright piece D by a bolt of wood or iron, or other metal, passing through said pieces 0 and D.
D is a piece of timber, of proper size, according to the kind of wood, for strength, fastened at its lower end, as before described, and made to play back and forth between said upper pieces, 0, from the latch E, when unlatched, to a point near enough to the plank B to keep the creature securely fastened between the pieces B and D, when the latch E is dropped down between said upper pieces, 0, and so latched.
Between the upright pieces B and D at the .upper ends, and between the upper pieces, 0,
is fitted in a piece of wood to keep the upright piece D in place when the latch E is dropped down between said upper pieces, G.
E is said latch, and fastened at one end in between the right-hand ends of said upper pieces, 0, by a bolt through it and said pieces, and notched at the other end, so as to hold said piece D from moving to the right when the latch is dropped down between said upper pieces, 0, the upper side of said notched end, when thus dropped down, extending over the upper end of said piece D. The right-hand end of said latch is made to project a little beyond the ends of said upper pieces, 0, so that it may be easily taken hold of to latch or un latch.
When the latch E is down, latched, the upright piece D stands parallel to the piece B, and near enough to it to make the creature securely fastened. The creature is tied up or 'fastened by throwing up said latch and movin g the upper end of the piece D to the right, so as to let the animals head in, and then moving said piece D to the left and dropping said latch into its place, and unfastened or let loose by throwing up said latch, so as to allow said piece D to move to the right.
I claim nothing as my invention but the construction and arrangements of the parts which hold the animal when tied up, so that they may swing, as before described, on said pins or pivots F, at the pleasure of the animal.
The tie-up is for horned cattle, and when they stand up, fastened in the foregoing manner, they can easily turn their heads round to the right or left, as the case may be; and when lying down it allows them to turn the head round at pleasure, and gives them much more case, comfort, and freedom, which are the ad vantages and improvements I claim.
When the aforesaid combination of parts which are to swing are made so as to swing the other way, as it is the design they may, the foregoing specification would need to be re versed (or changed) in some parts to meet the nation of the parts-B, F, G, D, and E, soas to case. allowthem toSwin'g' in toward or out from the It is my design that the combination of parts crib on said pins or pivots F, at the pleasure B, F, G, D, and E may be made to swing either of the animal, when -fastened, as herein deway, as the situation of the tie-up or oonvenscribed. ience may require.
What I claim as my invention, and desire Witnesses: to secure by Letters Patent, is- L. W. HOWES,
The construction, arrangement, and combi- J. K. KIMBALL.
