APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING ACETYLENE GAS.

'tained Letters Patent in France for fifteen years, dated June 17, 1896, No. 257,301,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to apparatus for producing gas, and has for its object to produce gas by bringing together two gas-producing elements and regulating suchmixing or bringing together in a suitable manner.
To this end our invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Our invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of an apparatus embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of a modified form of our apparatus. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the bucket-chainclevator apparatus for raising water.
The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 consists of a generator having a casing a, provided with manholes d d, closing openings 1) c in the easin g. A shaft h projects'into the casing opposite the aperture b and rests in a bearing 4). This shaft it supports a perforated drum 6, which contains the carbid. The drum c has a hollow axis 9, fitting on the shaft h, so that the drum e can be slid onto the shaft it through the aperture 12. The drum econtains calcium carbid and is provided with a lug e, which is adapted to cooperate with an arm hon the shaft h, so that the said shaft and drum may be coupled, whereby the drum may be driven by the shaft. The shaft h is provided with a wheel is, which is driven from a motor Z by a band m. A pipe r leads from the generator at to the gas-holder or gasometer u. This pipe is provided with a cock r, a gas cooling and condensing coil r and a receiver-c, provided with a purge-cock o. A standard 19 carries at its upper end a reservoir pfor containing water. Leading from the reservoir 19 is a pipe 02, which leads in to the generator-casing a, terminates over the revolving drum e, and has interpolated in its length a cock 0 and a regulator 0, which regulator is shown in the present instance as a small pipe of proper size to allow just a sufficient quantity of water to pass,which pipe may be, as shown, in the form of a sight-feed regulator. A small pipe (1 rises from the receiver o and conveys gas into the water-reservoir p, which gas will force water out of the reservoir 19 into the generator at through the pipe '11, it being understood that the reservoir 19 is a closed vessel except where it receives the pipes q and n, and consequently any admission of gas into the said reservoir by the pipe 19 will result in a corresponding outflow of water through the pipe n when the cock 0 is open. A valve sin the pipe q regulates the flow of gas therethrough, the said valve being controlled by a valve-arm 3, resting on a spring 8 and provided with a weighted handle 8 perforated for the passage of a cord M, which is secured to the gasometer or gas-reservoir u, and passes thence over pulleys 10 and is provided at its lower end with a weight if and a stop t, which is adapted to come against the handle 3 of the lever s, so that when the gasometer a has descended far enough to bring the stop if against the weighted handle .9 the said stop will raise the arm 8' and open the valve 8, and when the gasometer rises the weight will be correspondingly lowered and the weighted handle 5 will bear the lever 8 down, thus closing the valve 8 and shutting offthe supply of gas through the pipe q to the reservoir 1). The outlet-pipe w leads from the gas-reservoir to the street or service pipe 00. The generator is likewise provided with an outlet-pipe or escape-cock a, for allowing the escape of mixed air and gas at the commencement of the operation.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The stop-cocks r 0 being closed and the air-escape cook a of the generator open the cage e, filled with calcium carbid, is placed in position, the tray f emptied, if necessary, and the vessel 19 filled with water and closed.
The covers 01 having been closed and stopcocks r 0' opened the motor Z is set in motion and the gas-holder being in its lowermost position the cock 5 is open, and the gas generated by the first admission of water to the generator passes to water-reservoir p to force water out of the reservoir onto the calcium carbid contained in the revolving drum.
When the air has been expelled from the generator, the cook a is closed and the gas generated is delivered to the gas -holder. When the gasometer rises. sufiiciently to lower the weight and stop t to close cock .9, the gas is shut off from reservoir 19 and the supply of water to the generator ceases. As the carbid receives no more Water and is freed by the rotation of the drum of the residue of wet lime which falls into the tray f, the production of gas entirely ceases until the gas-holder descends and allows cock 3 to be opened by weight 2, and so on until the charge of carbid is completely exhausted.
In the foregoing arrangement the water is supplied by the gas-pressure to the calcium carbid, but it may be supplied by a pump, or by a bucket-elevator, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, driven from a wheel y, faston the motor-driven shaft h, by a chain z running on said wheel and a wheel 1 upon the axis of one of the drums 2 of the endless chain 3 of buckets 4:, which raise the water contained in a tank 5 and discharge it into a funnel 6, carried by the standard 7, and connected with a pipe 8, from which the Water is delivered by the pipe 72 onto the calcium carbid contained in drum 6, any water in excess being returned by the overflow-pipe 9 to tank 5. The acetylene gas produced in thegenerator passes out through pipe 0" to the gasholder 10 and raises the same, the motion of drum e and the supply of Water being simultaneously arrested by a cranked rod 10 being brought by the rise of the gas-holder 'u into engagement with the fly of the motor when the gas-holder reaches its highest point. The water then ceases to flow onto the carbid and the production of gas becomes momentarily interrupted, but is resumed when the gasholder descendsfthe fly then being released, the motor restarting the drum containing the calcium carbid and the pump or elevator.
Any suitable kind of motor may be employed vator 3.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In the herein-described apparatus for producing acetylene gas, the combination with the generator, of a closed water chamber or reservoir placed atahigher level than the generator and connected at its upper part by a pipe with the gas-discharge pipe from the generator so as to render the flow of water dependent on the gaseous pressure in the Water-chamber, a gas-holder a pipe leading from the generator to the holder, a Valve actuated by the gas-holder so as to arrest the admission of gas and consequently the supply of Water to the generator when the holder rises and a conduit connecting the waterchamber and the generator, as described.
2. In an apparatus for making acetylene gas, the combination of a revolving perforated drum or cage containing calcium carbid, means for removing the gas as generated, a gas-holder for receivingthe gas,means for supplying liquid to the perforated cage, comprising a closed water-chamber, a pipe connecting the Water-chamber with the generator, a pipeconnecting the Water-chamber andgas-holder whereby gas-pressure from to drive the revolving drum e and water-elethe gas-holder may be introduced into the water-chamber to force water therefrom to the generator, and means for controlling the flow of gas through the said pipe controlled by the movement of the gas-holder, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
