E.L.SNADER.
GO'FFIN.
No. 595,462. Patented Dec. 14,1897.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES Y PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD L. SNADER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COFFlN SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 595,462, dated December 14, 1897.
Application filed March 2 3, 189 7.
panying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the open end of the exterior coffin crease and the detachable head. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 3 is a horizontalsection on line w of Fig. 2 with gasketcut away at hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In said drawings the top and bottom of the casing or exterior coffin are shown at A A, projecting beyond the side pieces shown at B The side pieces B B are rabbeted on the inner edges of the ends, as seen at b b, and the inner faces of the ends of the top. and bottom pieces are cut away to a depth equal to the rabbet on the side pieces, except where the projecting surface abuts against the unrabbeted portion of the ends of the side pieces -B, this portion being flush, as seen at a a.
This construction of the ends leaves a continuous rabbet or recess around the open end into which is bent back the edge of the metallic lining of the case, as seen at d d, and said edge secured by screws 1 t" or other fastenings, The depthof this rabbet or recess is such as to also accommodate a rubber or other elastic gasket G,-upon which the re- Serial No. 628,813. (No model.)
movable head H bears when screwed up tightly. The gasket or packing may be on the head and fit into the rabbet without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I I discover that by abstaining from the use of the cross-bar, central screw, and other fastenin g effects, as described in my former patent, Ican get a cheap and efficacious fastening for the head by using headed bolts to pass through the removable head covering and which, passing through longitudinal holes h h v in the side pieces, engage with inserted nuts n n, which are set into the wood of the side pieces and by which the head-covering is drawn down with the enormous pressure of the screw in a metal bearing against the gasket to make the joint air and gas tight.
The conformation of the removable head H is to fit closely against the side pieces and inside the extended top and bottom pieces of the case. Thus the mechanical construction leaves a symmetrical construction of the inclosing coffin and all the exterior angles right angles, while the end is closed hermetically.
I am aware it is not broadly new to rabbet the edge of a coffin and secure the edge of the metallic lining in said rabbet, and I am also aware that coflin-covers have heretofore been secured by means of screws engaging with nuts embedded in the body of the coffin, and hence I distinctly disclaim either of these broadly as my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an exterior coffin the side pieces provided with the rabbeted interior edges, and the top and bottom pieces provided with the extended recessed ends, so cut as to form a recess around the entire opening, in combination with the interior metallic lining arranged as described, the gasket, removable head, bolts and inserted nuts, all constructed, arranged and operated as described.
