TRACK BRUSH AND SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,399, dated December 14, 1897.

Be it known that I, LORD CHANCELLOR MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Track Brushes and Scrapers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a device for brushing and scraping the tracks for railway-cars, the construction and operation of the 'parts of which will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure l represents a side elevation of a track brush or scraper embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof on line fr, 0c, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section thereof on line y y, Fig. l. Fig. fl represents a side elevation of another form of my invention. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view'of a detail portion of a track brush and scraper embodying my invention. Fig. 6 represents a bottom plan view of the brush proper. Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of a modified form of the brush employed in my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a hanger which is adapted to be secured to a proper portion of the car between the wheels thereof.
B designates a sleeve which depends from said hanger A and is pivotally connected therewith, the same being chambered or channeled, as at O, and telescopically receiving the follower D, whose walls E are guided by the walls of said chamber C. In said follower is the vertically-extending slot F, said follower having below said slot the opening G and the depending ear H, which latter has pivotally connected with it the ear J p of the brush J, said brush having a brushing-surface consisting of the slats or strips K', which are fitted in the slots L in the head J, said strips being arranged alternately on opposite sides of said plate and obliquely to the sides thereof and substantially parallel with each other, the ends overlapping.
M designates a pin which passes through openings N in the side walls of the sleeve B and also through the slot F, whereby the follower is retained in position in the sleeve and permitted to rise and fall, limited by the end walls of said slot F.
When the parts are in position shown in the flgures,the brushing material K is adapted to come in contact with the tread of the rail, thus cleaning the same, it being noticed that the head of the brush is permitted to turn on the ear H and the sleeve B to turn on the hanger A, thus adapting the brush to conform to any qualities of the rails.
In order to cause the brush to press firmly in position and to be restored to its normal position, there is interposed between the ear H and the head J of the brush a pad Q, which is formed of rubber or other suitable elastic or exible material, the same also preventing the brush from rattling or jarring.
Connected with the hangerA and the sleeve B is the spring R, which serves to restore thel sleeve B and connected parts to their normal position, the effect of which is communicated to the brush, while also permitting said sleeve to yield, due to any strain that may be imparted to t-he same.
In lieu of the pad Q, I may employ the bent spring T, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7, and in lieu of the spring R, I may employ the springs U, which are connected with the sides of the hanger and bear against those of the sleeve B, the action being similar to that hereinbefore described.
When it is desired to raise the brush from the rail, the pin M is removed and the follower R raised, when said pin is passed through the openings G in the follower and the sleeve, thus retaining the brush in elevated position.
The slats or strips of the brushing material K are located obliquely in the head, as shown vmore particularly in Fig. 6, so that the material brushed or scraped from the rail is thrown laterally, thus most effectively brushing and scraping the rail. The slats or strips have each one end of the same cast in one part or the entire part of the brush, as in Fig. 2, while in Fig. 7 said material is cast in the plate K2, which is let into the head of the brush and secured thereto by means of the bolts K3 and nuts K4 thereof.

When the brush or scraping material is worn out, the plate K2 may be removed and another' plate with fresh material restored and secured to the head, it being noticed that the walls of the recess into which the head is received inclose the sides of said plate and aet as a guard for the latter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A track scraper and cleaner having a hanger, a sleeve pivoted thereto, a follower guided in said sleeve, a brush depending from and pivotally connected with said follower, a cushion between said follower and the head of said brush and a spring attached to said hanger, and bearing against said sleeve.
2. A track scraper and cleaner consisting of a hanger, a sleeve pivoted thereto, a follower in said sleeve having a slot, a pin passing through openings in the side walls of the sleeve and said slot, a brush-head pivoted to said follower, and a spring attached to said hanger and bearing against said sleeve, said brush being vertically adjustable on said follower.
3. Brushing slats or strips, aplate carrying said strips, and a head to which said plate is secured, said plate having its material cast around the ends of the strips within the same.
4. In a track-seraper, a brush having a head, a plate thereon having slots in its under face extending alternately from the opposite sides thereof and strips with ends secured in said slots, said strips being parallel with each other and havin g overlappin g inner ends.
