0. D. GRUNDY. DENTAL APPARATUS.
No. 595,301. Patented De0.14,1897.
A TTORNEYJ STATES PAT i FFICE.
CHARLES DONALD GRUNDY, OF BATLEY, ENGLAND.
DENTAL APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,301, dated December 14, 1897. Application filed July 20, 1897- Serial No. 645,272. (No model.) Patented in England July 21, 1896,N0.12,123.
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES DONALD GRUNDY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Batley, in the county of Yorkshire and Kingdom of England, have i11- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Apparatus, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable th ose skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for constructing plates for dental vulcanizing purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved apparatus for this purpose by means of which an impression of the mouth, whether of plaster or of composition or any suitable material, may be lined with a thin plate of metal from which a model may be cast that shall have a bright metallic surface upon which to vulcanize, and by means of which the contour trial base-plates and polishingplates may be constructed in a more expeditious manner than heretofore and in such a way that the varying minute indentations and other irregularities of a persons mouth may be produced.
The invention is the same as that for which Letters Patent were granted in Great Britain July 21, 1896, No. 12,123, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a sectional side View of my improved apparatus; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section 011 the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
I11 the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a base plate or casting A, which is supported on pillars or columns P and which is vertically adjustable on said pillars or columns, the latter being screw-threaded at their upper ends and provided with two nuts or burs P The casting A is provided on its under side and centrally thereof with a circular chamber O and on its upper side with a corresponding circular water reservoir R, and mounted on one of the pillars or columns P and adapted to swing thereon is a lever or bracket B, and I also provide a metal cup K,
which is provided with an annular flange at its top which is adapted tofit within the chamber 0 and the base of which is provided with a tubular extension 73, which is adapted to be closed by a plug M, which in practice rests on lever B, and, together with the cup K, is supported thereby. Within the chamber C is placed a seat or diaphragm D, of rubber, and when the lever B is swung around into the position shown in Fig. 1 the cup K is exactly centered beneath the chamber C and the diaphragm D.
The apparatus is supported 011 a base G, with which the columns or pillars are connected, and said base G is provided centrally with upwardly-directed shoulders or projections 9, and mounted between said shoulders or projections is a cam g which is provided at each end with cylindrical bearings g which pass through said chamber and with one of which is connected a crank and by means of the crank-lever g and the cam g the lever B may be raised or lowered, and in this operation the cup K is pressed into contact with the rubber diaphragm D and locked in said position until released by the movement of the crank-lever 1 Fixed upon and connected with the chamber C is a liquid-press which is indicated by the letter L; and it will be understood that to line an impression of a persons mouth with a plate or film of metal, the impression being first constructed in the same fashion as hitherto, the cup K is nearly filled with plaster, and the impression, still in the tray in which it was taken, is pressed into it, the cup K being provided with a slot through which the handle of the tray may be passed, said slot being not shown; and when the plaster is set and trimmed a sheet of the metal cut to a suitable size is placed upon the impression. The cup K is then placed upon the lever B, and the said lever is swung around into the position shown in Fig. 1, and the cup is then forced upwardly by the crank-1ever 9 into contact with the diaphragm D. The liquid-press L is now brought into operation, and the liquid filling the chamber C exerts great pressure upon the top side of the rubber diaphragm D and causes the latter to press down the soft metal into close contact with the impression, thus lining it with a film of bright metal, and before removing the impression from the cup K plaster is run into the lined impression, and when this is set the whole may be removed from the cup K by a sharp blow upon the movable bottom of cup 0. The original impression may then be broken away and a model of the mouth is left covered with bright metal.
The liquid-press L is an ordinary hydraulic pump, and the water is forced from the open reservoir at the top into the chamber 0, the ram being worked by the lever, as described, and when the requisite force has been exerted the water returns into the reservoir through the spindle or side. This construction, however, may be of any desired form and in detail forms no part of my invention.
The cup K is also provided in the bottom thereof with a detachable plate K, which preferably consists of a metal disk and which covers an aperture in the bottom of the'cup through which a blow may be delivered on said detachable plate, the object of which is that the contents of the cup may be easily dislodged.
Trial and base plates may be made by taking an impression of the metal-covered model in composition, after which the cup K is filled with plaster and the impression pressed into it, and upon removing the composition impression a model is obtained exactly similar to the first, but not covered with metal, and a sufficient number of the thin metal plates are then pressed on this model, in the manner hereinbefore described, so as to form a trial and base plate. Artificial teeth being mounted upon this base-plate with wax in the same fashion as hitherto an impression in composition is then taken of the lingual side, including the edges of the teeth, and from this composition impression a die may be cast in one of the metal cups K, and a sufficient number of the thin metal plates are then pressed onto the die, thus forming a polishing-plate, and, the vulcanizing process taking place between the aforementioned polishing-plate and the metal-covered model, a polish is obtained without subsequent retouching, hitherto un attainable, and the vulcanite is of the same thickness throughout, thus acquiring greater strength and lightness.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an apparatus of the character and for the purpose herein described, the combination with a suitable base, of pillars or columns connected therewith, a top plate or casting adjustably mounted thereon, said top plate or casting being provided in its under side with a circular chamber in which is placed a movable rubber diaphragm, a cup which is adapted to entersaid chamber, and press upon said diaphragm, a lever or bracket revolubly connected with one of said pillars or columns, a liquid-press mounted above said casting or top plate, and in communication with said chamber, and means for raising the lever or bracket, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an apparatus of the character and for the purpose herein described, the combination with a suitable base, of pillars or columns connected therewith, a top plate or casting adjustably mounted thereon, said top plate or casting being provided in its under side with a circular chamber in which is placed a movable rubber diaphragm, a cup which is adapted to enter said chamber, and press upon said diaphragm, a lever or bracket revolubly connected with one of said pillars or columns, and in communication with said chamber, and means for raising the lever or bracket, consisting of a cam mounted on the base and provided with a crank-lever, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of May, 1897.
CHARLES DONALD GRUNDY.
