UNTTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. POOLER, OF CEDAR BLUFF, IOVA.
SAWiNG-NIACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,002, dated December 7, 1897'. Application filed .Tune 24, 1897. Serial No. 642,135. (No model.)
To LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. POOLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Bluff, in the county of Cedar and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to what are known as riding sawing-machines, in which a flat saw is reciprocated or moved back and forth by means of an operator mounted upon the machine.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of the same, in which the saw may be operated by hand or foot power, or both, and in which the saw may be arranged to cut transversely through a log lying upon the ground or horizontally through a standing tree for felling the same.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sawing-machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig'. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail elevation, on
an enlarged scale, of the pitman. Fig. 5 is adetail view of the guide-slide for the pitman. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the movable crosshead. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the pivoted legs. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the sleeves and the hand and foot lever connected therewith. Fig. 9 is a plan view showing the cross-head which carries the tension-spring bar. Fig. 10 is a side' elevation of the same. Fig. 11 is a front elevation.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a vertical front bar provided at its lower end with a rearwardly-extending horizontal bar 3, provided at its rear end with a bracket 3a, passing through the bracket to a short vertical bar 4, provided at its lower end with a pointed foot 5. The upper end of this bar 4 is connected with bar 1 by a horizontal bar 6. At the upper end of bar 1 is a sleeve 7, through which passes a transverse shaft S, held in place by a set-screw 9, and at each end of this shaft is a coupling 10, with which is connected an inclined adjustable leg 12, provided at the lower end with a pivoted pointed foot 13.
The parts so far described constitute the frame of the machine.
Rotatably mounted on the shaft 8 are two sleeves 14, with which are connected downwardly-depending foot-levers 15, provided intermediate the ends with a rcarWardly-eX tending arm 1G, having a foot-piece or treadle 17 at the rear end. To the lower end of one of said levers is connected one end of a strap 18, which passes around a pulley 19, journaled to the bracket 3a. The other end of the strap is secured to a movable cross-head 20, having a central aperture and two opposite slots 21, with which the flattened or rear end of rod or bar 3 engages. The other foot-lever is provided with a strap 23, which passes around a pulley 24, similar to pulley 19, and then extends forwardly and around a pulley 25, and is then secured to said cross-head 20. To said cross-head is secured a forwardly-extending guide-rod 26, secured to a guide-slide 27, working on the rod or bar 3. To the said sleeves 14 are secured upwardly-extending hand-levers 28.
The numeral 29 designates a vertical tube secured to rod 6, in which Works an adjustable rod 30, held in place by a set-screw 3l. The upper end of the rod is provided with a seat 32.
The numeral 34 designates a pitman, to one end of which is secured a saw 35, which may be arranged to make a vertical cut, as seen in Fig. 1, or may be set at a right angle, so as to make a horizontal cut. The pitman at its rear end is pivoted to a stud 36 on one side of the pitman or may be connected with a similar stud 37 when it is desired to make a horizontal cut.
The numeral 3S designates a block at the lower end of rod 1, formed in itsfront face with a vertical groove 39 and with a transverse groove 40. This block is provided with a stud 4l, which passes through a movable clamping-plate 42, formed with grooves 43 and 44, corresponding with grooves 39 and 40. Pivoted to this stud is a cam-lever 45 for pressing the clamping-plate against the block.
Located in the grooves 39 and 43 and clamped between the said plate and block is a vertical IOO bar 46, having a hook 47 at its lower end with which engages a chain 48, connected with a coiled spring 49, the other end of which is connected with the pitman. This spring gives the proper tension to the pitman and'saw, and when the latter is cutting horizontally the said bar is engaged with the horizontal grooves 40 and 44, so as to occupy ahorizontal position. Said bar can be adjusted by loosening the clamping-plate so as to regulate the tension of the spring. Also connected with the pitman is a chain 50, the upper end of which is connected with an elbow-lever 51, pivoted or journaled to shaft 8 and provided with handle 52. By means of this lever and chain the pitman and saw can be raised and lowered.
The numeral 53 designates a segment-rack with which a pawl 54 on said lever engages to hold the latter in position'when the saw is elevated.
The operation will be readily understood. The operator sits upon the seat and actuates the hand or foot levers, or both, thereby reciprocating the pitmau and saw.
As before stated, the saw may be arranged to make a vertical cut, as seen in Fig. 1, or the pitman may be disengaged from stud 36 and engaged with stud 37, thereby turning the saw at a right angle, so as to make a horizontal cut.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sawing-machine of the character described, the combination with the frame, the pointed foot at the rear, the adjustable legs and the pointed' pivoted feet, of the transverse shaft, the sleeves journaled thereon, the hand and foot levers secured thereto, the straps, the pulleys, the sliding cross-head, the pitman, the seat and adjustable support, substantially as specified.
2. In a sawing-machine, the combination with the frame` the pointed foot at the rear, the adjustable legs, and the pointed pivoted feet, of the transverse shaft, the sleeves journaled thereto, the hand and foot levers, the adjustable seat, the straps connected with said foot-levers, the pulleys, the movable cross-head, the pitman, the adjustable bar at the front of the machine and the tensionspring connected therewith and with the pitman, substantially as specified.
3. In a sawing-machine of the character described, the combination with the frame, the hand and foot levers, the straps connected with said foot-levers, the pulleys and the movable cross-head, of the pitman, the adjustable bar, the tension-spring connected therewith and with the pitman, and the elbowlever connected with said pitman, substantially as specified.
4. In a sawing-machine of the character described, the combination with the hand and foot levers, the straps connected with said foot-levers, the pulleys and the movable crosshead, of the reversible pitman, the studs secured to said cross-head and at right angles to each other, with which said pitman is adapted to engage, the grooved block, the stud, the grooved clamping-plate, the cam-lever, the reversible bar, and the tension-spring connected therewith and with the pitman, substantially as speciied.
5. In a sawing-machine of the character described, the combination with the frame, the pointed foot at the rear, the transverse shaft, the inclined adjustable legs having pivoted pointed feet, the sleeves journaled to said shaft, the hand and foot levers secured thereto, the adjustable seat, the straps connected with said foot-levers, the pulleys, the movable cross-heads, the studs secured thereto at right angles to each other, the guide-rod and the guide-slide, of the reversible pitman, the adjustable reversible bar, the tensionspring, the elbow-lever and the chain connected therewith and with the pitman, substantially as specilied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. POOLER.
