THOMAS OWEN, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO. THOMAS J. BAKER AND JACOB V. DEALY, OF SAME PLACE.
RULlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,808, dated November 30, 1897. Application filed May 25, 1897. Serial No. 63 8.124. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern: usted. 18 denotes a ratchet-lever suitably Be it known that I, THOMAS OWEN, a citiconnected with the standard 1 1 for rotating Zen of the United States, residing at Houston, the wheel tooth by tooth for a purpose presin the county of Harris and State of Texas, ently to appear. 19 denotes a beam which 55 have invented certain new and useful Imis carried by said carriage and has bolted to proveinentsin Ruling-h/Iachines; and I do deits forward end a head 20, to which the toolclare the following to be a full, clear, and exsupporting bar 21 is journaled, said bar being act description of the invention, such as will rotated by the crank-wheel 22, locked against enable others skilledin the art to whichit aprotation by a sets'crew 23 and adjusted in 60 1o pertains to make and use the same. the direction of its length by a set-screw 24. B'y rotating the crank 31 and its 3o 2, journaled in a standard 3, adapted to be wheel it is evident that the carriage will be attached to a table by screws at or the like. moved longitudinally of the track 1. The other end of this track 1 is provided with The operation of the device is as follows: a foot-piece 5, having athumb-screw 6, by When it is desired to draw or out straight means of which the track is adapted to be lines, the standard 3 is secured to the table 35 held to the table in its proper adjustment, and the foot-piece5 is also secured to the ta- This foot-piece has its upper end projecting ble after the machine or implement has been a slight distance above the track, and con adjusted over the work. I screws 23 and 24:, The crank 31 is now ro- 9o 40 8 denotes a carriage, which consists of a tated back and forth, and the tool or pencil standard 9, havinga grooved base 10, adapted at the end of the bar 21 will be reciprocated, to embrace the tubular track 1 and be held and at the end of each line, by working the thereto :or permitted to reciprocate thereon ratchet-lever 18 a tooth or more, the spaces by a set-screw 11. This carriage is provided between the lines may be varied. It now it 5 with alateral extension 12, having a standard be desired to draw or cut lines at an angle to Y 13 in line with a standard 14, projecting upthose drawn or cut, by loosening the thumbwardly from the carriage. Journaled in the screw 6 and swinging the foot end of the standards 13 and 14C is a screw-shaft 15, on track in the desired direction the lines may the end of which is secured a ratchet-wheel be made at angles to those already made. I00 50 16, providedwithacrank-handle 17, bymeans When it is desired to make circular work, of which itis rotated and the parts quickly adthe set-screw 11 is worked to clamp the carriage to the track 1, the set-screws 24 loosened, and the bar 21 moved in or out, according to the circle to be made. The set-screw 24 is then clamped to hold the bar in its extended adjustment and the set-screw 23 is loosened. Now by rotating the crankwheel 22 the tool or pencil at the end of the bar will cut or draw a curved line, and if it be desired to cut parallel curved lines by operating the ratchet-lever 18 this may be accomplished.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring further explanation.
The device is exceedingly simple in construction, strong in parts, and may be placed upon the market at comparatively small cost.
'While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of myinvention, I would have it distinctly understood that I contemplate and reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fall within the scope of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an instrument of the character described, the combination with the track, of a carriage mounted to reciprocate thereon, a beam having a sliding engagement in said carriage, means for sliding said beam lengthwise, said beam being provided with a head, and a tool-bar rotatably connected with said head, and provided with means for locking it, substantially as set forth.
2. In an instrument of the character described, the combination with the track, of a carriage mounted to reciprocate thereon, a
beam having a sliding engagement in said carriage, a ratchet-wheel carried by said carriage and provided with a screw-shaft, a nut engaged with said screw-shaft and adj ustably connected with said beam, said beam provided with means for clamping and holding a tool or pencil, substantially as set forth.
3. In an instrument of the character de- 4:. In a tool of the character described, thev combination with the standard, a post journaled therein, a pulley journaled on said post, a track connected to said post and provided .at its outer end with a foot having means for fastening it stationary, a carriage adapted to slide on said track, acord or connection wound about said pulley and having one end secured to the carriage at one point and the other end passing around a sheave journaled to the outer end of the track and secured to the carriage at another point, and a beam having a head at one end, means for longitudinally adjusting the beam, and atool or pencil bar rotatably connected with said head and provided with means for fixing the tool-bar to said head, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
