EXHAUST-UTILIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,624, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed July 21, 1897- Serial No. 645,441.
new and useful Improvements in Exhaust Utilizers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an apparatus for utilizing the exhaust fluid-pressure from boilers and steam and other engines; and its obect is to provide an improved construction of apparatus of this character by which the exhaust fluid-pressure may be utilized for driving engines and machinery or for heating'purposes. To this end the invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings herewith, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3, a top plan iew. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the supply-pipe and connections, and Fig. 5 a detail perspective view of the cone-valve in the supply-pipe.

2 is a main supply-pipe leading from the exhaust-pipe of the boiler or engine and opening through one head of the reservoir, a collar 3 retaining it in position. This supplypipe is .provided with a valve-seat 4 for an inwardly-opening hollow cone-valve 5 and in rear of said valve-seat with a conical reducing-bushing 6 and a conical reciprocating cutoff valve 7, controlling the flow of fluid-pressure therethrough. Connected with the other head of the reservoir are escape-pipes 8 9 and a supply-pipe 10, which in practice leads to the engine or other motor to be driven or to a steam-heating system. The auxiliary escape-pipe 8 is in communication with the main escape-pipe but may, if desired, vent directly to the atmosphere.

The motive agent-such as steam, for insta'ncefeeds into the reservoir 1 through the pipe 2 and thence out through the pipe 10, which may be provided with suitable controlling-valves. The cut-off valve 7 is connected with a lever 11, fulcrumed to the pipe 2, anda lever 12 is connected with an oscillatory plug-valve 13 in the main escape-pipe 8. The free ends of these two valve-levers l1 12are connected by a rod 14, so as to move in unison, so that when the valve 7 is moved to cut off the supply of steam the valve 13 will be opened to permit steam to escape from the reservoir, and vice versa, this operation-being effected automatically through the provision of a rod 15, connected with a governor (not shown) on the engine or motor driven. The reducing-bushing 6 and a valve 7 are designed to regulate the supply of steam to the reservoir in accordance with the amount of steam passing through the pipe 10, so as to maintain a given pressure in said reservoir; but when the engine is running above its normal the valve connections hereinbefore described are operated to close the valve 7 and open the valve 13 to allow the excess pressure in the reservoir to exhaust to the atmosphere.
When, however, back pressure occurs when the engine is running at its normal speed, the incoming steam flows through an exhaustpipe 16, connected with the pipe 2, back to the source of steam-supply. I may provide this exhaust-pipe with a whistle or other alarm device 17 to notify the engineerthat back pressure exists.
. The valve 5 is hollow and comprises two cone-frustums arranged in apposition and having their apexes connected. This valve is hollow and forms a reduced or contracted feed-orifice 5 at the center, where said apexes join. At the enlarged end of each cone-frustum the valve is provided with spaced shoulders or wings 5, on which it moves, the Spaces between said shoulders forming inlets for passage of steam. The motion of the valve is limited by the seat 4: and collar 3. In order to quickly relieve the reservoir 1 and main supply-pipe 2 of excess steampressure, I have provided said parts with cylinders 18 19, in which operate plungers l8 19.
2O 20 represent operating-rods fulcrumed, respectively, to standards 21 21. The outer end of the rod 20 is jointed to the rod of the plunger 19, and the inner ends of the two rods are jointed to a wrist-pin 18 on the rod of the plunger 18. The rod 20 is connected with the upper end of a lever 22, which in turn is connected at its lower end to a crankshaft 23, carrying an oscillatory plug-valve 24, controlling the escape of steam through the pipe 0. hen the steam-pressure within the reservoir rises above that in the supplypipe, the plunger 18" is forced upward, the rod 20 tilted, and the valve 2% opened, permitting the excess pressure to escape through the pipe 9 as well as the pipe 8, and the plunger 19 forced downward and held closed until the pressure in the supply-pipe predominates, whereupon the plunger 19 will rise, force the plunger 18" down, and close the valve 2%. The plunger-rods may be provided with arms or projections 25 to support weights for the purpose of adapting the plunger-s to move under any pressure desired.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of the apparatus will be readily understood.
The apparatus may be employed in connection with boilers and engines of various kinds for driving auxiliary machinery and, when used on locomotives, for driving an engine or dynamo to furnish power for wreckingcrews, lighting the train, and for other purposes. I do not therefore limit the invention in application to any particular fluidpressure motor or to any particular use.

1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a reservoir, a main supply-pipe provided with a reducing-bushing, a check-valve and a reciprocating cut-oil valve, a discharge-pipe, an escape-pipe having a valve, levers connected with said valve and the reciprocating cut-oil"; and an adjustable rod connecting said levers, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an apparatus of. the class described, the combination of a reservoir, a main supply-pipe, a conical reducing-bushing in said pipe a conical reciprocating cut-off valve connecting therewith, a check-valve between the cut-off valve and reservoir, an exhaust-pipe adapted to carry off the pressure in the supply-pipe when said check-valve is closed, a discharge-pipe,an escape-pipe having a valve, levers connected with said valve and the reciprocatin g cut-oft,and an adjustable rod connecting said levers, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a reservoir, a main supply-pipe having a check-valve adapted to close when the pressure in the reservoir exceeds that in the main pipe, a discharge-pipe, an escape-pipe provided with a valve, cylinders in communication with the supply-pipe and reservoir, a plunger in each cylinder, a tilting rod connecting the rods of said plungers, and a lever connecting the tilting rod and escape-pipe valve, substantially as described.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a reservoir, a main supply-pipe provided with a reducing-bushing, a check-valve anda reciprocating cut-oil valve, a discharge pipe, an escape-pipe provided with a Valve, cylinders in communication with the supply-pipe and reservoir, a plunger in each cylinder, a tilting rod connecting the rods of said plunger-s, and a lever connecting the tilting rod and escape-pipe valve, substantially as described.
