Description

UNITED STATES PATENT Oruro" L. M. CRANE7 OF BALLSTON SPA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,223, dated September 25,1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, L. M. CRANE, of Ballston Spa, in-the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Shirt-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the following drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichvFigure l is va front view of a shirtcollar constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view ot' the same in section, or a portion torn off, in order to show clearly the character of the invention.
Similar lettersv of reference indicate like parts. i
The principal objection attending the use of' paper shirt-collars is that they are very soon soiled and rendered useless, especially in warm weather, by the perspiration from the neck of the wearer; and also that the paper around the button-holes very frequently tearsin adjusting the collar on the neck or in removing it th eref rom.
My improvement is designed to obviate these difficulties; and it consists in having a thin layer or sheet of gutta-percha interposed between lthe layers ot' paper .of the collar, whereby moisture is prevented from striking through the same, and the tearing of the fabric or material around the button-holes prevented in putting on and taking oft the collar.
A represents a shirt'collar, which may be cut or manufactured in any of the known forms adapted for paper collars or combined paper and cloth collars.
The collar has a thin sheet, B, of gutta pereha interposed between two layers, C C, ot' paper, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. This sheet of gutta-percha eft'ectually prevents perspiration from striking through the collar, and it also renders the paper fabric strong, so that it will not be liable to tear, especially around the button-holes a, a contingency ot' very frequent occurrence, occasioned by adjusting the buttons on the shirt through the button-holes in securing the collar on the neck.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture- A paper shirt-collar having a thin sheet or layer of guita-perch. interposed between the layers of paper of which the collar is constructed or niade, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 15th day of August, 1866.
v L. M. CRANE.
