ARTHUR H. CASTLE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
TROUSERS GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed February 11 1896.
1'0 tall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. CASTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Clamp for Binding Trousers in Folds about the Ankles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in what is commonly known as trousersguards, a device constructed of wire or other suitable material for the purpose of holding the bottoms of trousers-legs folded about the ankles for convenience and safety in riding upon the bicycle; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a guard that will hold trousers-legs of any usual width snugly about the ankles by folding them over once only, and, second, to hold them in such a manner and with such a minimum degree of friction and pressure on the cloth that they shall not become worn, wrinkled, or crushed out of their proper shape through frequent application of the guard.
Of the several possible plans of construction embodying my improvements the one that I prefer and adopt to attain these objects is a metal clamp having two elongated jaws connected at their lower ends, one of said jaws with lateral branches or arms and so shaped that it closes longitudinally over and past the plane of the other or inside j aw,toward which the said lateral arms are inclined or bent, and beyond which they extend on either side, thus when applied to the trousers holding the cloth folded back over the under or inside jaw and by means of the connecting springs and peculiar shape of the clamp obtaining a bite upon the fold between the jaws of said clamp sufficient to bind it firmly in the desired position against the ankle.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a detailed View in perspective of the entire clamp. Fig. 2 is a side view of the clamp, showing the relation of the two jaws to each other. Fig.
Patent No. 581,848, dated May 4, 1897.
Serial No. 577,755. (No modeli) 3 is a sectional view of the clamp from a point directly over it, showing the proper adj ustment of same and the fold in the cloth as it would appear if the trousers leg were cut off just above the device. Fig. A is a side view of the clamp as applied to the trousersleg when in use.
Similar letters refer to similar parts of the clamp throughout the several views.
The springs A A, the inside jaw B, and the outside jaw O, with the two arms D D, constitute the clamp.
The arms D D are attached to the outside jaw O and may be bent at any angle that will be of the most assistance in holding the fold in the cloth in place against the ankle, and each clamp is provided with two arms for the purpose of making them interchangeable and better holding the said fold in posit-i011.
The inside jaw B is made longer than the outside jaw O for convenience in folding the cloth over its projecting end without 11indrance from contact with the outside jaw C. After the cloth has been folded over the projecting end of jaw B the clamp may be forced up over the fold made by pressure on its lower ends A A, thus forming the crimp or bite on the cloth above referred to, which secures it firmly in the desired position.
Reference to Figs. 3 and 4 will show the manner in which the outside jaw 0 holds the folded cloth in place over the inside jaw 13.
I do not broadly claim a metal clamp as my invention, but
hat I do claim as new and patentable, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A clamp for trousers-guardshaving the intel-locking jaws B and O, the latter or outside jaw 0 constructed with lateral arms D D closin g longitudinally over the inside jaw 13, said jaws connected and held together by springs A A, all substantially as above set forth, and for the purpose specified.
ARTHUR II. CASTLE.
