PROTECTING REGISTRY-ROLLS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,730, dated April-13, 1897. Application filed September 8, 1896. Serial No. 605,141. `(No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, CHARLES A. SCHIND- LER, Jr., of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Registry-Rolls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in cases for protecting registry-rolls when the same are exhibited for inspection before election as required by the law in many States.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a sectional front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the cover removed.

In many States the registry-rolls lmust be publicly posted for a certain time previousto election so that they are open to inspection. In doing this itis very common that the same are so exposed to the weather that they become in part or wholly illegible on account of the rain which falls thereon.

My device is intended to make the rolls easily accessible and to protect them in such a manner that they may be posted in any location without being damaged by the weather.

With this end in View I make a flat boX A, of metal, wood, or other suitable substance which is capable of resisting the effects of the weather. The upper end of this box has a removable cover B, which passes entirely outside thel box-casing, so that there will be no leakage between the same to get upon the rolls. The lower edge of this box is mainly open, but has a small stop or projection C eX- tending across the back side thereof.

Attached to the under surface of the cover B is a block D,preferably of wood. To this block are attached the pivot-bearings or brackets E at each end thereof. These support the journals of a spring-actuated roll F. This roll has a spirally-coiled spring G in its center, which is attached to one of the pivots H and to the roll. The spring, as shown, is inserted in the same manner as the spring of the ordinary Hartshorn shade-roller. Any

other form of spring which is found suitable for the purpose may be substituted instead of this, or, in fact, any other means by which the :rollerV may be rotated a sufficient amount to withdraw the rolls. The means of rotating the roller may be varied in any manner found desirable. This forms no essential part of my invent-ion, as such means are widely known. To this roller F is attached a sheet of fabric or carrier I. To this backing-strip or carrier is clamped a combined guide and stop consisting of the bar J. This bar J eX- Vtends the entire length of the case and also the entire width, being made an easy sliding tit therein. Just below the bar J is clamped the upper edge of the registry-rolls K by means of the bars L, which are placed on opposite sides of the carrier and secured thereto by means of thumb-screws L. The case is made sufficiently deep, so that when the backingstrip or carrier I is rolled upon the rollers until the stop J comes in contact with the fixed stop M, placed in the upper edge of the case, the lower edge of the roll will be entirely inside the case.

The registry-rolls for use in this device should be made out`upon sheets of paper and the sheets clamped between the clampingbars L. As many sheets as necessary may be clamped between these bars, the lower edges of the sheets being left free, so that any one of them may be readily inspected. Staples or eyes O are attached to the upper edge of the case, by which it maybe hung up against the side of a house or any other convenient place.

When the cap B of the case is removed, the roller, the backing-strip or carrier, and the rolls are all removed directly by pulling out of the 'upper edge.

Having thus described my invention, -I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- `r1. :Ina case for vprotecting registry-rolls, the" combination of a protecting-casing with abacking-strip or carrier therein for receiving the registry-rolls, and having a Vportion normally.projectingffrom the lower edge of the "casing, means for removably clamping` thesheets containing the rolls to said carrier,

3. In a case for protecting registry-rolls, a

protecting-casing having an opening in its bottom edge, -a springactuated roller in=the upper portion thereof, and a iieXible carrier attached thereto, in combination with .stops at top and bottom ofthe case, and a combined guide and stopon't-he carrier between the above stops, and means: for clamping the registry-rolls tothesaid carrier, substantially as described.

4. In a case for protecting registry-rolls, the combination of a boX closed. except on its bottom edge and havinga removable cover, a spring-actuated roller inthe upper end thereof pivoted on said cover, and a carrier therein with a stop attached to the carrier, stops within the case at top and bottom limiting the motion of said carrier, and means for clamping the rollsto said carrier, substantially as described.
