Beit known that we, GEORGE S. CARRIGAN, residing at Mack, and LEANDER C. THOMP SON, residing at Paragould, in the county of Greene and State of Arkansas, citizens ot' the United States, have invented a new and useful Broom-Head, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in broom-heads.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of broom-heads and to provide a simple, strong, and durable one adapted to engage securely a broom-handle and capable of iirmly holding and equally spreading the straw and retaining a broom in shape.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a broom provided with a head constructed in accordance with this invent-ion. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of the broom. Fig. 4E isa detail perspective View of the broom-head.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

l designates a broom-head consisting of a frame constructed of wire and composed of two substantially diamond- shaped sides 2 and 3, having V- shaped lower portions 4 and substantially straight vertical sides 5 located adjacent to the side edges of the straw G of a broom, and the upper portion 7 of the sides converge toward the handle 8 of the broom and terminate in shanks 9. The shanks 9, which are arranged in pairs, are located at opposite sides of the broom-handle S,and have spurs at their upper4 terminals which are retained in engagement with the broom-handle by a sleeve or band 10, encircling the lower portion of the handle and binding the shan ks against the same. The lower portion of the handle 8 is recessed at opposite sides to provide grooves for the reception of the shanks,

`and the head by this construction is rigidly connected to the broom-handle.

The frame is provided at points intermediate of the ends of the sides 5 with eyes l1, and it has eyes l2 at its lower end. These eyes receive bolts 12a and 13, each firmly clamping the straw in the head; and the bolt-s are provided with nuts in order that the straw may be tightened from time to time and to enable the straw of the broom to be readily taken out when worn. The upper bolts are arranged at the sides of the straw, and the lower bolt 13 passes centrally through the straw and divides the same, causing the straw to spread the lower V- shaped portions of the sides, facilitating such spreading.

The side 2 of the frame is `provided at op posite edges of the broomstraw with transverse tongues 14, formed by bending the wire of the frame in the form of a loop; and these tongues are located at the lower terminals of the said portions 5 of the sides of the frame and have their ends bent outward and engaging the side 3 of the frame. The broom-straw is embraced at its opposite faces by cross rods or pieces l5, provided at their terminals with eyes and arranged on the upper fastening devices l2.

It will be seen that the broom-head is exceedingly sim ple and inexpensive in construction, that it is strong and durable, and that it is capable of firmly connecting the broom straw to the broom-handle. It will also be apparent that it is capable of spreading the broom-straw and of enabling the same to be removed when desired, and that it will retain a broom in shape.

Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
