SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,404, dated April 13, 189?.
Application filed June 29,1896.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, URIAH D. KEAGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Liberty, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to gate-openers.
My object is to provide an improved, cheap, and simple device adapted for connection to any ordinary hinged gate, and especially to those gates which swing in both directions, which will be capable of quick and easy manipulation by the foot of the person at the gate, so that it can be readily swung open without the necessity of unlatching the gate by hand.
Having this object in view, my invention consists, in combination with the usual gatelatch mechanism, of improved mechanism adapted for manipulation by the foot of the person at the gate, to trip the latch connection so that the gate can be readily swung open.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation showing my invention in use on an ordinary double-swing gate, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view thereof.
A designates an ordinary gate, and B the usual hinge-post, to which the gate is connected by any preferred form of a doubleswing hinge O. The gate-post is designated by the letter D and is provided with the-usual latch-catch 1. To the gate is pivoted the usual latch 2, which is adapted for engagement with catch 1 when the gate is closed.
To two of the palings of the gate is connected a short cross-bar 3, which is located immediately behind the rear end of the latch.
The numeral 4 designates a latch-trip having a shank 5, which is suitably connected to cross-bar 3 and provided with an upwardlyextending spring tripping-arm 6, which normally overhangs the rear end of the latch and is provided with a vertical handle 6 for use in depressing the tripping-arm with the hand. Near the lower portion of the gate is located a second cross-bar 7, which lies in vertical alinement with the latch, said cross-bar being provided with a vertically-extending aperture 8. I provide a pull-rod 9, whose upper end Serial No. 597,450. (No model.)
passes through the spring-arm 6 and handle 6, and is provided with an adjusting-nut 10, while the lower end of said rod passes through aperture 8 and terminates in a double foot rest 11,which extends transversely of the gate, so that its opposite ends project out on either side thereof and make it adapted for depression from either side of the gate.
The operation is as follows: Let it be assumed that a person is approaching the gate, which is locked, and that said person has both of his arms in use carrying a parcel or other article. When the gate is reached, the person places his foot on the foot-rest and forces it down. When the foot-rest goes downward,the pull-rod draws the spring-arm down upon the rear end of the pivoted gate-latch, thereby tripping the other end of the latter out of engagement with the catch on the gate-post. The gate may now be swung open by the person pushing against the same and without necessitating the useof the hands.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a gate-opener, the combination with a gate, and a pivoted latch thereon for fastening the gate, of a spring tripping-arm having one end connected to the gate and its free end adapted for engagement with the latch, and a depressible pull-rod connected to the tripping-arm.
2. In a gateopener, the combination with a gate, of a pivoted latch thereon for fastening the gate, a spring tripping-arm having one end secured to the gate and its free end adapted for engagement with the pivoted latch to raise the same, a cross-bar provided with an aperture and located below the latch, and a depressible pull-rod having its upper end connected to the spring tripping-arm, and its lower end passing through the aperture in the cross-bar, the extreme lower end of said pullrod being provided with a double foot-rest having its respective ends extending out on opposite sides of the gate.
