Description
G. G. DOYLE.
STOCK AND DIE.
(N0 Model.)
Patented Sept. 7,1897.
WITNESSES S v/ E N w T T A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE G. DOYLE, OF OGDEN, UTAH.
STOCK AND DIE.
SIRECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,645, dated September 7, 1897.
Application filed March 5, 1897- $erial No. 625,985. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. DOYLE, of Ogden, in the county of Vleber and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved. Stock and Die, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved stock and die, more especially designed for the use of plumbers and other mechanics and arranged to permit of using diiferent-sized dies on the same stock and having the dies of each set always set to properly cut the threads accurately.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view ot the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 30f Fig. 1. *ig. dis a plan view of the die-plate and its dies separate from the stock. Fig. 5 is a face view of a modified form of the improvement, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of another modified form.
As illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, I provide the usual stock A with suitable guideways B for the reception of a die-plate G, adapted to abut at one end against a suitable stop D, fixed on the stock A. A setscrew E, screwing in one side of the stock A, is adapted to engage the plate 0, so as to securely hold the same in position in the guideways B of the stool; A.
On the die-plate G is arranged the set of dies F, secured in place on the plate by bolts G, passing through slightly-elongated holes in the dies to permit of accurately adjusting the same on the said die-plate, preferably by means of set-screws H, screwing in lugs 0, formed on the die-plate G. The cutting-heads F of each die F fit into a central aperture 0 formed in the die-plate, so that each die is securely held against movement in the plate 0 after the dies are once adjusted to a standard thread, it being understood that the said dies on a die-plate form a complete device for attachment to the die-stock, so that the operator is enabled to quickly place any desired size of dies on the stockA and secure the same in place thereon by fastening the plates 0 in position without danger of having the dies inaccurately set,- as is frequently the case in die-stocks and dies as now used and in which the dies are adjustable in the stock.
} As illustrated in Fig. 5, the die-plate G is made circular and is fastened in position on the revoluble stock A by means of bolts I. Instead of two dies F, as shown in Fig. 1, four such dies F are employed and fixed on the plate 0 so as to be attached with the latter to the stock A or removed therefrom whenever desired. The same arrangement of dies F is shown in Fig. 6, and the dies are fastened in place on the plate 0 adapted to be secured by bolts 1 to a stock A to be manipulated by hand.
By the arrangement described the dies are always set right and no iron chips can get under the dies, so they will not track or fol low each other.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination with the stock, of the centrally-apertured die-plate adapted for attachmentthereto,an d having slideways ranging toward the center of the plate at the aperture thereof, dies mounted to move on said slideways, and adjusting devices carried by the plate and engaging the dies, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the stock having a slideway, of a die-plate fitted to move on said slideway, and a plurality of dies carried by said plate, at opposite sides of the plates center, substantially as described.
8. The combination with the stock having a slideway, of a die-plate fitted to move on said slideway, a plurality of dies arranged to move on said plate, at opposite sides of the plat-es center, and adjusting devices carried by the plate and engaging the dies, substan= tially as described.
GEORGE G. DOYLE.
