Witnesses "4 am /I fa/M JOHN T. SEVERNS, OF BURLINGTON, IIEV JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 58,899, dated October 1F, 186V.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. SEVERNS, of' Burlington, in the county ot' Burlington and State ot New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view ot' the same; Fig. 3, plan view of side piece before bending; Fig. 4, vertical view of the side piece.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in all the figures.
The sides of this box are composed ot' a single strip of thin pliable wood, A, bent as shown. At those points where the wood is to be bent, so as to form the corners of the box, I make two or more incisions, a a, upon the in4 ner side ot' the wood, extending partially through the same. The number and distance apart of the incisions a a are governed bythe rotluudityot" form which it is intended to give to the corners ofthe box. If the box is to have partially' rounded corners, as herein shown, then tWo incisions are made.
The rotundity ot' the corners may be increased at pleasure by increasing the number of incisions and separating them at a less distance.
B is the bottom of the box, made of one or more pieces of thin flat wood, secured within the sides A by means of nails at any desired point.
It is preferable to have the bottom secured a short distance above the lower edge of the sides A, as shown.
The ends of the strips A are united by means of nails b or cement.
I do not claim, broadly, the invention of fruit-boxes made ot' one piece of wood, with corner-angles formed by an incision upon the inside of the wood. I am aware that boxes thus formed have been made. They are liable to the objection that as there is but one incision it must be deep, and as the wood must be bent so as to form sharp rightangular corners the wood is apt to break apart at the corners. Any light blow against the corners, or the ordinary handling and wear of common use, soon causes such boxes to separate at the corners and renders them useless.
By the use of my improvement the corners ot' the box are rounded, the incisions required are slight, and the strength of the box at the corners is greatly increased.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article ot' manufacture, is-
Fruit-boxrs the sides of which are formed by a single piece ot' thin steamed wood, having rounded corners formed by two or more internal lcerfs sawed partly through the board and bottom, constructed and inserted substantially as set forth.
JOIIN T. SEYERNS.
