R.J. WILLIAMS.
NUTMBG GRATER."
No. 588,207. Patented Aug. 17,1897-,

UNITED STATES PATENT VEEICE.
ROBERT J. WILLIAMS, or VINCENNES, INDIANA.
"NUTM EG-G RATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,207, dated August 1'7, 1897.
Application filed February 12, 1897. Serial No. 623,047. (No model.) l
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nutmeg-Graters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,c lear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to V,whichV viding a grater having'a roughened face and an opening at one end thereof anda nutmegholder provided with flanges running in grooves on the grater and open at the inner side thereof, so that a nutmeg may be inserted through the said opening in the grater into the holder, and the said holder having a springpressed follower adapted to hold the nutmeg firmly pressed against the corrugated or roughened face of the grater, so that the entire nutmeg may be grated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective View of a nutmeg-grater constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view thereof, taken through the sliding nutmeg holder and grater and Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the sliding nutmeg-holder removed from the grater.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A des.- ignates a grater consisting of an approximately semicircular-shaped piece of metal provided with a roughened or corrugated face B, formed by punching holes through the said face from the interior side thereof in the usual manner. The terminal edges of the side flanges cof the grater are bent inward to form a guidewaytl, which is closed by a stop-piece d at each end thereof. The corrugated face of the grater is provided adjoining one end thereof with an opening e, through which the nutmeg is inserted into the holder F, as hereinafter described.
-The holder F consists of a metal casing of cylindric or other suitable form provided with la substantially semicircular base part G,
which extends across the corrugated or roughened face B. The side flanges h of the holder-base are coiled at their terminal ends h to form side pieces, which are confined within and traverse the said guideways d of the grater. The inner end of the holder or casing is open, so that when the said holder is in coincidence with the opening e of the grater a nutmeg may be inserted'from the inner side of the grater into said holder. lA follower i is inclosed within the case of the holder and is attached to a stem k, which pro- -jects to the exterior through a tubular extension Z on the closed vhead of the case and is provided on the exterior with a head or knob lo. By means of this head or knob the springpressed follower may be drawn inward to permit of theinsertion of the nutmeg.
In practice the holder containing the nutmeg is slid rapidly back and forth over the corrugated face of the grater until the entire nutmeg has been grated o`r'a portion'of the same has been grated for use as desired. The spring-pressed follower keeps the nutmeg into contact with the said corrugated face until the entire nutmeg has been thoroughly grated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A nutmeg-grater having a grating-face and two sideflanges formed integrally therewith, said flanges having their edges coiled inwardly to form guideways, stop-pieces closing witnesses.
