SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 587,223, dated July 27, 1897.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, STEWART D. MOKELVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ganton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio,

, for supporting, securing, and protecting the head-rest pads and for permitting the removal of the pad-covering when worn.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure '1 is a perspective view of a head-rest pad secured to its supporting-cup. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same, taken through the length of the pad. Fig. 3 shows the pad-plate detached from the other parts of the device, and Fig. 4 illustrates the cover inclosing the pad and its plate.

The numerall indicates the cushion or pad proper, which is preferably made of rubber, inflated with air, and provided with a central depression 2 on either side, as shown in Fig.

2. This form of pneumatic pad constitutesthe subject-matter of separate applications for Letters Patent heretofore filed by me, and therefore no claim to said pad is herein. made except as an element of the combinations defined in the appended claims.

3 indicates a supporting and reinforcing metallic plate adapted to receive the pad, as shown in Fig. 2. This plate conforms in general contour to the surface of the pad, being hollowed out or concaved on its inner side 1 and provided with a central boss or projection 5 in the form of a truncated cone to fit the depression 2 in the pad. The outer side of the plate 3 is rounded at the points 6 corresponding to the form of the pad and is provided centrally (opposite to the boss 5) with a depression 7, from which projects an internally-threaded socket 8, adapted to receive Serial No. 524,556. the screw 9 of the supporting-cup 10, as will be hereinafter further explained.

The pneumatic pad and its plate 3 are provided with a covering 11 of plush, leather, or other suitable upholstering material. This cover is preferably cut round or in elliptical form and provided with an edge drawstring 12, so that by drawing the ends of the string and securing them the cover is neatly secured in place and serves to secure the pad and plate together. The pad and its plate 3, as thus covered, are then placed in the supporting-cup 10, which is of the concavo-conveX form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and provided with a central screw-opening 13, which registers with the threaded socket 8. The parts are then finally secured and clamped together by the screw 9, the edges 14 of the cover being concealed by the cup, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

The cup 10 may be provided with any suitable means for securing it upon a head-rest port-for the pad, but it will be apparent that by simply removing the plate 15, and screw 9 the parts may be readily disconnected to permit of the renewal of the cover 11 or any other purpose.

It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the form of pad shown in the drawings, but reserve the right to employ a pneumatic ring, a spring-pad, or any other suitable yielding cushion.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A head-rest pad, consisting of the combination with a pneumatic cushion or pad, havin g central depressions on either side, of a plate hollowed out to fit said pad,and provided with a central projection entering one of said depressions, a removable cover for said pad and plate, and a supporting-cup within which said plate fits, and a securing-screw for detachably joining the plate and cup, substantially as described.

2. The combination with the elastic pad, of a reinforcing-plate conforming in contour to said pad, and provided with a central projection to engage said pad, and with an interiorly-thrcaded socket to receive a screw, a removable cover for said pad and plate, and a cup secured to said plate, and concealing the edges of the cover, substantially as de scribed.

3. The combination with the pneumatic pad formed with a central depression, of a reinforcing, and supporting plate hollowed out and provided on its inner side, with a central projection to enter said depression, and on its outer side with a threaded socket, a cover inclosing the pad and plate, and provided with an edge draw-string, and a supporting-cup,
