To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that. I, J UDSON CAREY PAN- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Penholders, of which-the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to pe nholders; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanyin g drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference throughout both views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view showing the position of the various parts of my improved penholder when thepen is in position, and Fig. 2 a similar view showing the position which the parts assume in order to release the pen.

In the practice of my invention I provide a tubular penh older 5, the outer end of which is cut away at an inclination, as shown at 6, and the inner end of which is provided with an annular inwardly-directed flange or rim 7, and formed in the under side of the holder adjacent to the outer end is a longitudinal slot or opening 8, and the bottom portion of the holder is extended to form a tongue 9, which is curved upwardly and inwardly and downwardly, as shown at 10, the downwardly-curved end being directly over the outer end of the slot 8. I also provide an arm 11, which is pivoted within the holder 5 at 12 and which is provided with a downwardly-directed extension 13, which passes through the slot 8, and the arm 11 projects outwardly through the outer end of the holder 5 and is adapted to hold the pen 1% in position, as shown in Fig. 1.

In connection with the holder 5 I employ a pen-stock 15, which may be of the usual or any preferred form and which is provided with a cylindrical extension 16, which is pointed at its outer end, as shown at 17, and which is designed to bear on the extension 13 of the arm 11, and said reduced extension 16 of the penstock is provided with an annular collar or band 18, which is secured thereto and between which and the inwardly-directed annular flange or rim 7 is mounted a spiral spring 19.

The normal operation of the spring 9 is to force the pointed end of the extension 16 of the pen-stock against the downwardly-directed extension 13 of the arm 11, and this operation of the spring holds-the pen in place, and whenever it is desired to remove the pen it is only necessary to grasp the holder 5 and pull outwardly on the pen-stock, when the arm 11 will assume the position shown in Fig. 2 and the pen will drop out. w

The pen is secured in place by pulling outwardly on the pen-stock and afterward releasing the same after the pen has been placed in position, and it will thus be seen that I accom plish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which is well adapted to produce the result for which it is intended; and it will also be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A tubular penholder, the outer end of which is open, and provided with a pivoted arm, said arm being projected outwardly, and provided with a downwardly-directed extension, and a pen-stock provided with an extension which passes into said holder, and on which is mounted a spring by which the extension of'the pen-stock is forced against the downwardly-directed extension of said arm, substantially as shown and described.
